13 3 – Respond to Conflicting Expectations
Analyze cultural conflict: Identify a conflict from this segment of the film, and explain whether it is an internal or external conflict. Address both sides of the conflict, and describe how the resolution, if any, is reached.

14 4 – Reflect on Types of Conflicts
Think about what you know about conflicts between family members. Describe the types of conflicts that occur between the family members shown below. Relationship Types of Conflicts Mothers and Daughters Fathers and Daughters Mothers and Sons/ Fathers and Sons What are some of the reasons for the conflicts listed above?

15 4 – Read the Poem “Father and Son” by Tomasz Jastrun
Describe the conflict between the father and son. What is the cause of the conflict? How is the conflict resolved? Look back at the words and phrases you recorded early and share them with a partner or group. Copy the words down into a “found poem” with the title “Mother and Daughter.” The poem can include film experiences or your own. Remember that a found poem is made up of words and phrases from other sources – other poems, texts such as newspaper, books, signs, and so on. Share Poems!

16 4 - “Father and Son” Here is not good enough
And he looks at me with reproach But what can I do I’m not about to offer excuses So I let my silence speak Finally he hugs me As if he suddenly realizes We have to get along to come to an agreement There is no one else To deal with And after a while We both get to work He collects Old bus tickets I fuss with words Out of which I can whittle My crutches and can

17 5 - Assignment for Film and MSFM Group Essay (Intro – conflict – side’s of conflict – conflict’s resolution – how conflict illuminates meaning of the work – conclusion) – This requires 4 group members total. Analyze a conflict of a character. Notice how their mind is pulled in conflicting directions by compelling desires, ambitions, obligations, influences, attitudes, perspectives, and cultures. In a well-organized essay, identify each side of the conflict and examine the reasons for the conflict, the conflict’s resolution, and how this conflict illuminates the meaning of the work as a whole. Reality vs. Expectations, People vs. People, etc.

18 5 - Rubric Scoring Criteria Exemplary Proficient Emerging Ideas
Analysis is focused and appropriate. The character is explained with clarity and precise nature of the resolution and the conflict with its implications to the work as a whole. Specific words and examples used to support the position. Thorough and perceptive literary analysis is convincing.

19 Man’s Search for Meaning
6 - Viktor Frankl

20 Dr. Viktor Frankl 1905-1997 3 years of his life in concentration camps
Professor of both neurology and psychiatry Specialized in treatment of depression and suicide Wrote 32 books, translated into 23 languages

21 Logotherapy Frankl created the 3rd Viennese School of Psychology
Freud: Psychoanalysis Adler: Individual Psychology Frankl: Logotherapy logos = reason/word therapy = heal

22 6 – Conflicts and Themes mentioned in MSFM (Discuss)
Man's lack of ability to find meaning on a personal level rather than a comparative one that drives him to feel hopeless and distraught. No matter what type of suffering a person endures, as long as they hold onto their faith that everything happens for a reason, they can survive. By believing that everything happens for a reason, individuals are able to weather the storms of their lives with the strength and determination to overcome. One can conclude that society provides little more than an extraneous influence on self-image. Proper counseling, in the form of logotherapy (the word Logos is defined as "meaning"), will help the individual find the will to meaning. life holds a potential meaning under any conditions, even the most miserable ones. “An abnormal reaction to an abnormal situation is normal behavior.” (Frankl 38) “Let one attempt to expose a number of the most diverse people uniformly to hunger. With the increase of the imperative urge hunger all individual differences will blur, and in their stead will appear the uniform expression of the one unstilled urge” (Freud)

23 GROUP WORK Draw the spectrum of philosophy and place Frankl on it
On paper, please do the following: Draw the spectrum of philosophy and place Frankl on it Please also place each group member on the spectrum as well According to your assigned school of philosophy, record at least 5-10 examples of how that philosophy was manifested by the behavior in the camps
