Solving Equations 2(5x +3) = 4x - 6 X=?? Created by: Ms. Dufour

How do we solve equations? 2(5x +3) = 4x - 6

Distribute any terms that are outside of a set of parenthesis. 2(5x +3) = 4x – 6 10x + 6 = 4x - 6

How do we solve equations? 2(5x +3) = 4x - 6 Combine any like terms that are on the same side of the equal sign. 10x + 6 = 4x – 6 No like terms!

How do we solve equations? 2(5x +3) = 4x - 6 Move all variables to one side of the equal sign. 10x + 6 = 4x – 6 -4x -4x 6x + 6 = -6

How do we solve equations? 2(5x +3) = 4x - 6 Move all terms that are hanging out to the other side of the equal sign. 6x + 6 = -6 -6 -6 6x = -12

How do we solve equations? 2(5x +3) = 4x - 6 Isolate the variable by undoing the operation that is associated with the variable. 6x = -12 6 6 X = -2 Multiplication Division undoes

How do we solve equations? 2(5x +3) = 4x - 6 Check your solution by replacing your answer! 2(5x +3) = 4x – 6 2(5·-2 + 3) = 4·-2 – 6 2(-10 + 3) = -8 – 6 2(-7) = -14 -14 = -14 Its right!!
