3 Laura Richard Region V Region Report to RSAC 6 Jan 2011 Membership From Nov 2010 Membership Report · Long term trends are on following pages Professional Membership: 1859 · Decrease of 43 since last RSAC (July 2010) · Drop from 2008 is continuing. · All Large Sections show the drop, Small Sections stayed even Student Membership: 636 · Increase of 9 since last RSAC (July 2010). · Upturn continuing compared to past couple of years. Educator Associate Membership: 222 · Increase of 64 since last RSAC (July 2010) · Upturn continuing · All Sections participating, one Section is not dominating.

7 Laura Richard Region V Region Report to RSAC 6 Jan 2011 Professional Membership Observations Region V membership has been trending up slightly since 1997, but has been showing a decrease since 2008 · All Sections have all shown decrease over the past year, only one showed an increase over the past six months Short term trends over the past six months: · Iowa- 5 · Rocky Mountain- 9 · St. Louis- 19 · Twin Cities+ 2 · Wichita- 2 Long term trends: · Regional membership is continuing a downward trend – Rocky Mountain drop continuing after long rise over the past decade – Wichita continuing to drop from 2008 peak – St. Louis continuing long term slide – Iowa, and Twin Cities have less pronounced down trend Continuing focus on calling drop, new and transfer members St. Louis membership chair reported getting some negative feedback about dues increase from non-renewing members

Educator Long term trends: · Regional membership is above 2007 levels and is at its highest recorded average level

17 Laura Richard Region V Region Report to RSAC 6 Jan 2011 Section Highlights Iowa · Section Award for Career & Workforce Development (3 rd ), and Outstanding Activity Award · Continue working the logistics of next years student conference and will utilize lessons learned from 2010; scheduled 6-8 April – Region V provided $6,000 in support · Distinguished Lecturer for the 11 Nov dinner meeting · Sponsored a book signing "The Deep sea Quest for Amelia Earhart" by David Jourdan followed by presentation regarding the explorations of Amelia Earhart – Approximately 120 Engineers, K12 and College students and aviation enthusiasts; it had a very good impact on K12 students Rocky Mountain · New Chair Identified · Audit and Budget Report submitted in Nov; new Treasurer just identified

Dr. F.W. Roos · Family Movie Night - 12 November "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines · December Events: – "From Parachutes to Whales - Applying the Unsteady Aerodynamics of Inflation to the Study of Lunge Feeding by Whales The dynamics of inflation during lunge feeding will be compared to that of the US Army G-11 flat circular parachute – Craig Brown shared information about the Phantom Ray, a "one off" fighter-sized Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle (UCAV) technology demonstrator designed as a flying test bed for advanced technologies

19 Laura Richard Region V Region Report to RSAC 6 Jan 2011 Section Highlights Twin Cities · Section Awards Outstanding Section (1 st ), Career & Workforce Development (2 nd ), Communication (1 st ), Membership (2 nd ), STEM K-12 Outreach (2 nd ), Public Policy (2 nd ) and Young Professional Activity (2 nd ) · Outreach to the Students within Twin Cities but see the challenge of encouraging the students to become professional members · Submitted Engineer of the Year Nomination Mr. Brian Naslund; RAC agreed to submit his nomination from Region V · Open Council Meeting for the section to encourage new participation in October · Distinguished Lecturer Mr Hugh Neeson on the Story of Miss Lend Lease for December Dinner Meeting · Completed draft By-law update and final will be available in May for approval by RSAC · Aerospace Movie Marathon scheduled for Jan · Will encourage participation by the section for CVD
