5 Vocabulary: WHOLE NUMBER
AKA: a counting number. One of the complete numbers (1, 2, 3, …) or zero. 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

6 Vocabulary: DECIMAL A symbol (.) used to demonstrate that a number is a fraction or not complete. The opposite of a whole number. For example: 1.5, 8.77, 9.201 0.1, 2.34, 5.678, 9.012

7 Vocabulary: PLACE VALUE CHART
A tool used to organize numbers. The chart shows the order and names of the places for a number.

8 Vocabulary: STANDARD FORM
Use one or more of the digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 to write a number. Example: 1,023

9 Vocabulary: SHORT WORD FORM
Use the words billions, millions, thousands, etc. to write a number. Use the word ‘and’ to represent the decimal. Example: 1 thousand, 23

10 Vocabulary: EXPANDED FORM
Break the number down into each digit and use addition signs. Example:

22 The Moral of the Story A place-value chart can help you read and understand very large and very small numbers.

23 Independent Practice On your place value chart, create a challenging number. On the L side of your notebook, find the standard, short word, and expanded forms of your number. Trade place value charts with a table partner (do not give them the answer in your notebook). Partners, use the clue from your partner to identify the standard, short word, and expanded forms of his/her number. Return to the author, so he/she may check if it is correct.
