May 2007 -- HP Restricted 2 NVM and Firmware Non-volatile memory (NVM) Firmware upgrade n

May 2007 -- HP Restricted 3 Topic 1: Non-volatile memory Non-volatile memory (NVM) is data that is preserved in the MFP through a power cycle or power loss Stored in the following locations: Engine Main PCA (A5) Scanner Control PCA (A501) ADF Control PCA (A401) Finisher Main PCA (A200) MFP Coprocessor hard drive Formatter Main PCA (contains NVRAM) and hard drive

May 2007 -- HP Restricted 4 Types of NVM data Customer data – Includes stored jobs, digital send information (email addresses, names, networking information, MFP IP address) For privacy and security, service and support staff cannot handle customer data! –Customer data is backed up and restored by system administrator Machine data – Job settings, calibration values, usage counters, system logs, model configuration –Machine data is backed up and restored by service personnel

May 2007 -- HP Restricted 5 Backup modes for NVM machine data Internal Stored on formatter hard disk Performed by CDFT-E or CDFT-L Performed automatically on a regular basis (you must enable this – defaults to 1x a week) External Stored on CD, USB device, or laptop Performed by CDFT-L or CDFT-E (USB only) Keep backup CD with MFP (recommended)

May 2007 -- HP Restricted 6 Formatter NVRAM Machine warranty/history data 50 latest error log entries 50 latest warning log entries Device settings Copy of JDI Mac address/security string Copy of EWS configuration info Formatter EFI NVRAM BIOS code BIOS control flags Firmware upgrade version control database Network/Fax PCA NVRAM JDI Mac address – not affected by resets/inits Engine NVRAM Not affected by resets/inits Finisher NVRAM Not affected by resets/inits Scanner NVRAM Not affected by resets/inits Non-volatile memory data distribution Formatter Disk Coprocessor Disk Code Partition Formatter firmware Copy of firmware superbundle Dsk_ide0a partition Shadow copy of formatter NVRAM Redundant disk data Stored/scheduled/safeguarded jobs 3 rd party applications, executables, and fonts PJL disk Stored overlays PDL data/directories Job history log EWS configuration info Serviceability Partition 200 entry error log 200 entry warning log Machine data backup JDI Partitions JDI configuration C Partition Coprocessor firmware D Partition Database Copy of redundant disk data E Partition Windows workspace Temporary files OS swap space Ellipses indicate redundantly stored data

May 2007 -- HP Restricted 7 NVM resets and initializations Startup Menu Service Tools Startup Menu, Administrator Tools Control Panel Administration Menu NVRAM initializationX Cold resetX Restore factory settingsX Reformat drives -- Formatter disk -- Coprocessor disk X Initialize disks: -- Formatter disk -- Coprocessor disk - -- Both disks X Skip disk loadX Erase private dataX

May 2007 -- HP Restricted 8 Topic 2: Perform firmware upgrade 2-step process: Download firmware image file to a buffer in the MFP, using any of the following: –When in startup menu: Download from CDFT-L using USB 2.0 (no USB flash drive) –When MFP is in “ready” state: CDFT-L using LAN FTP CDFT-L using USB (not recommended, slow) HP Web Jetadmin Upgrade firmware – happens automatically during bootup if MFP detects different firmware version in buffer

May 2007 -- HP Restricted 10 Firmware upgrade process Start boot Startup Menu System ready Download firmware from CDFT-L, FTP, etc. Download firmware using USB OR Firmware is upgraded automatically (do not remove power during this process) Reboot

May 2007 -- HP Restricted 11 CDFT-L firmware upgrade Choose the firmware upgrade method you want to use

May 2007 -- HP Restricted 12 Startup menu firmware upgrade

May 2007 -- HP Restricted 13 Controlling firmware download and installation Firmware download options: Download now Reinstall all subsystems Reformat drives Continue boot after download Firmware installation options: Force all Disable all Reset to defaults Reformat coprocessor drive Subsystem install options –Automatic –Force –Disable
