Volunteering at the Tanning Salon, Survey and compiled data about Tanning beliefs. Kara Julianne Todd

Why I chose my topic and product  I used to tan and I wanted to learn what the tanning beds have done to my skin.  Mom had skin cancer.  Researching the dangers of tanning beds led me to decide that my product would be to volunteer at the local tanning salon, At The Beach Tanning & to make brochures and surveys.

Tanorexics  Feel more relaxed from being in the tanning bed  Can get depressed and anxious if they do not tan  Believe they look healthier with a dark tan  Have a 75% increased risk of getting skin cancer

Skin Cancer Skin Cancer  A sunburn with multiple blisters doubles chance of developing melanoma skin cancer later in life.  Moles changing in size  Moles with red-brownish tint could be the development of skin cancer.  Tanning bed exposure

Tanning Beds And Its UV Radiation  Tanning beds lamps can emit about 93-99 % of UVA rays & 7-1 % of UVB rays.  UVA rays age skin more than UVB rays do.  UVA rays have a higher risk of giving tanning users skin cancer.  UV radiation damages young skin more than it will to aged skin.  UV rays damage all skin colors.

From Paper to Product  Link between Paper and Product:  Paper states facts about dangers of tanning beds  My product allowed students and tanning patrons to provide me with the results of the statements on my survey.  My product shows results in a bar graph on my brochure and will be shown on trifold as well.

English III  Difficulties:  Problems with organizing my paper  Needed teacher assistance  Successes:  Had more than enough information to put into paper

My Product

Mentor  My mentor’s name is Crystal Ramirez. She owns a local tanning salon in Clayton called “At The Beach Tanning.”  She helped me by:  Signing papers that needed to have her signature  Discussed my brochures and surveys  Allowed me to survey her customers  Taking pictures of me while I volunteered at her salon

Challenges And Successes  Product Challenges:  Figuring out what my product would be  Managing my time well for project completion  Product Successes:  Finding a mentor and getting help with my product

What I Learned-The Facts  Tanning beds aren’t magical.  Tanning bed users are 4 times more likely to develop Melanoma skin cancer than nonusers.  Skin cancer risks will be lowered if not using tanning beds. I decided to stop tanning in beds because I have young skin that can very easily be damaged.

Reflection  I am most proud of:  The mentor and topic I chose  Completing all my work  I learned  By rushing to get project assignments turned in right before due date, will cause me more stress than I could handle.  I am good at talking to people I don’t know.  My graduation project will help me in the future:  Become a non-tanning bed user as of now  I am more aware of my health now.  Researching a topic and making a decision

Thank you for your time. Do you have any questions?
