Portfolio Presentation Evening Welcome, Parents!

Welcome to our Portfolio Presentation Evening!  We would like to introduce you to Portfolios and their place in our assessment procedures

All About Portfolios  A portfolio is a purposeful, meaningful collection of student work. This collection tells a story about a student’s developmental growth, achievements, and progress over time.  A portfolio is a living collection, evolving over time, but always reflecting student’s current efforts.

Assessment  Parent teacher conferences  Report cards  SATS tests  End of Yr optional SATS tests  Portfolios  Student-led conferences P T conferences Report cardsPortfoliosSATS tests Student led conferences optional SATS

What do Portfolios look like?  Portfolios at the BESA are folders containing examples of student achievement from different subject areas.  The content and organization will differ from student to student.

Reflection  What have I done?  Where am I in my learning?  What are my strengths?  The purpose of the portfolio is not simply a collection of work.  It shows the child as a learner and reflects on their growth and development. “We do not learn from experience we learn from reflecting on experience” John Dewey

What research tells us about metacognition…  Metacognition is thinking about thinking. Metacognitive skills are important learning outcomes because research indicates that pupils who have acquired metacognitive skills are better able to compensate for both low-ability and insufficient information.  Recent studies indicate that pupil attitudes, effort,achievement,self-appraisal and target-or goal-setting are enhanced when pupils are taught self-evaluative techniques which enable them to attribute their success to personal actions, help them to identify concrete steps for improvement, and promote their ownership of their learning.(Rolheister, 1996,Ross, Rolheister and Hogaboam- Gray 1998,1999.)

Portfolio Presentation  The student- led portfolio presentation allows the child to share with their parents their achievements. Reflection happens when pupils think about their work in relation to established criteria, analyse the effectiveness of their efforts and plan for improvement.

How Does it work?  You will be invited to come to the hall for a 15min conference.  Teacher in background.  Focus on parent and child.  Child in the driving seat!

Reflection  Strengths.  Challenge as a learner.  Attitudes.  Social and emotional development.  Self-analysis.  Habits of mind. Reflecting on what has been learned and articulating that learning to others is the heart and soul of the portfolio process. Without reflection a portfolio has little meaning.

Let’s celebrate our childrens’ achievements! “ At student-led conferences, you talk to your parents about all your work and things you have learnt and how to make them better. I think they’re a lot better than having your teacher do all the talking.” Year 6 Student
