2 SECTION ONE What is GHS and OSHA Hazardous Communication? WEBINAR JANUARY 2013 © 2013 360training.com

3 What is GHS? GHS stands for the "Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals". GHS is a system that defines and classifies the hazards of chemical products, and communicates heath and safety information on labels and material safety data sheets (called Safety Data Sheets, or SDSs, in GHS). The goal is that the same set of rules for classifying hazards, and the same format and content for labels and safety data sheets (SDS) will be adopted and used around the world. An international team of hazard communication experts developed GHS. WEBINAR JANUARY 2013 © 2013 360training.com

4 What is Hazardous Communication? An OSHA regulation that requires chemical manufacturers, suppliers, and importers to assess the hazards of the chemicals that they make, supply, or import. Inform employers, customers, and workers of these hazards through MSDS information and labeling. WEBINAR JANUARY 2013 © 2013 360training.com

5 GHS and OSHA Hazardous Communication Combined? OSHA's proposal to adopt the GHS will not change the framework and scope of the current HCS. Ensure improved quality and more consistency in the classification and labeling of all chemicals. Enhance worker comprehension resulting in appropriate handling and use of chemicals. Harmonized format of SDS will enable workers to access the information more efficiently. The adoption of GHS will minimize burden of multiple labels and SDS developed for the same product when shipped to different countries. WEBINAR JANUARY 2013 © 2013 360training.com
