Reason for God’s groundrules “Now if you will obey me and keep my covenant, you will be my own special treasure from among all the peoples on earth; for all the earth belongs to me. And you will be my kingdom of priests, my holy nation.” Exodus 19: 5 – 6

God gave them these ground rules to follow so that as a nation they could reflect His holy name.

Exodus 32: 1 – 11; 14; 30 - 34 When the people saw how long it was taking Moses to come back down the mountain, they gathered around Aaron. “ Come on, ” they said, “ make us some gods who can lead us. We don’t know what happened to this fellow Moses, who brought us here from the land of Egypt. ”

Exodus 32: 1 – 11; 14; 30 - 34 So Aaron said, “ Take the gold rings from the ears of your wives and sons and daughters, and bring them to me.” All the people took the gold rings from their ears and brought them to Aaron.

Exodus 32: 1 – 11; 14; 30 - 34 Then Aaron took the gold, melted it down, and molded it into the shape of a calf. When the people saw it, they exclaimed, “ O Israel, these are the gods who brought you out of the land of Egypt! ”

Exodus 32: 1 – 11; 14; 30 - 34 Aaron saw how excited the people were, so he built an altar in front of the calf. Then he announced, “ Tomorrow will be a festival to the Lord! ” The people got up early the next morning to sacrifice burnt offerings and peace offerings. After this, they celebrated with feasting and drinking, and they indulged in pagan revelry.

Exodus 32: 1 – 11; 14; 30 - 34 The Lord told Moses, “ Quick! Go down the mountain! Your people whom you brought from the land of Egypt have corrupted themselves. How quickly they have turned away from the way I commanded them to live! They have melted down gold and made a calf, and they have bowed down and sacrificed to it. They are saying, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt. ’”

Exodus 32: 1 – 11; 14; 30 - 34 Then the Lord said, “ I have seen how stubborn and rebellious these people are. Now leave me alone so my fierce anger can blaze against them, and I will destroy them. Then I will make you, Moses, into a great nation. ” But Moses tried to pacify the Lord his God.

Exodus 32: 1 – 11; 14; 30 - 34 So the Lord changed his mind about the terrible disaster he had threatened to bring on his people.

Exodus 32: 1 – 11; 14; 30 - 34 The next day Moses said to the people, “ You have committed a terrible sin, but I will go back up to the LORD on the mountain. Perhaps I will be able to obtain forgiveness for your sin. ” So Moses returned to the LORD and said, “ Oh, what a terrible sin these people have committed. They have made gods of gold for themselves. But now, if you will only forgive their sin, but if not, erase my name from the record you have written! ”

Exodus 32: 1 – 11; 14; 30 - 34 But the Lord replied to Moses, “ No, I will erase the name of everyone who has sinned against me. Now go, lead the people to the place I told you about. Look! My angel will lead the way before you. And when I come to call the people to account, I will certainly hold them responsible for their sins. ”

I.ISRAEL’S CHEATING HEART II.GOD’S BROKEN HEART III.MOSES’ PLEADING HEART

I. ISRAEL’S CHEATING HEART 1. 1.When the people saw how long it was taking Moses to come back down the mountain, they gathered around Aaron. 2. 2. “Come on” they said “make us some gods who can lead us. ” 3. 3. “We don’t know what happened to this fellow Moses, who brought us here from the land of Egypt.”

I. ISRAEL’S CHEATING HEART The Israelites couldn’t see God. They saw Moses, a man who delivered them from their slavery. When Moses didn’t come back to them as they expected, they replaced him by turning to Aaron. Aaron in turn, led them to worship an inanimate object created from their wealth, to replace the God who rescued them from Egypt.

I. ISRAEL’S CHEATING HEART Israel cheated on God, with their promiscuous behaviour by replacing Him.

I. ISRAEL’S CHEATING HEART Like Israel, we cheat on God, by replacing Him when we can’t see or hear from Him.

II. GOD’S BROKEN HEART Jealous anger

II. GOD’S BROKEN HEART “You must not bow down to them or worship them [other gods], for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods.” Exodus 20:5

II. GOD’S BROKEN HEART The Israelites aroused God’s jealous anger when they chose to worship things other than Him.

II. GOD’S BROKEN HEART God’s jealous heart breaks every time we replace Him.

III. MOSES’ PLEADING HEART 1. 1. Moses tried to pacify God’s anger 2. 2. Moses faced up to the fact that the Israelites had sinned 3. 3. Moses begged for their forgiveness, even offering his life as a ransom

III. MOSES’ PLEADING HEART For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but now in these last days he has been revealed for your sake. 1 Peter 1: 18 – 20

III. MOSES’ PLEADING HEART 1. 1.Moses tried to pacify God’s anger, but Jesus bore the wrath of God on the cross. 2. 2.Moses admitted to Israel’s guilt, Jesus placed our guilt on His shoulder. 3. 3.Moses offered his life as a ransom for Israel’s sin, Jesus died as a ransom for our sin.

III. MOSES’ PLEADING HEART Jesus died to overcome the power of idols in our life.

III. MOSES’ PLEADING HEART Like Moses, Jesus pleaded, is pleading and will continue to plead with God on our behalf, till we move from being cheaters to being faithful.
