Researching a Valid Medical License It is important for many people to check on their doctors to ensure they have a valid medical license and are in good standing. This tutorial will demonstrate the process for locating your doctor’s license record online and verifying that he or she has a valid license and has a clean record.
Sample Research Question A patron approaches you at the reference desk and asks: “I am considering switching doctors and I want to make sure the doctor I am considering switching to is licensed and does not have a history of malpractice”. “I did a Google search, but I can’t seem to locate any official documentation related to the doctor in question”.
Identify the Appropriate Website or Database Administrators in Medicine (AIM) DocFinder Website Located at: http://www.docboard.org/docfinder.html
Navigate to Indiana Database Step 1: Inform your patron that every physician must be licensed within the their state and that checking the status of a license is public information. The AIM DocFinder page provides links to each of the state medical board pages The first thing you would do is find the link to the Indiana State Board page and navigate there https://extranet.in.gov/WebLookup/Search.aspx
Performing the Search Step 2: Ask the patron for as much relevant information that is necessary to form a search in the Indiana License Database. If they have the license number of the doctor in question that is great, but usually a first and last name will suffice Choose “Medical Licensing Board” in the “Profession” drop-down menu and fill in the first and last name along with other information the patron may have given you. Then Click Search
Pulling Up the Record Step 3: After you clicked “Search” on the search page, records matching your search will be displayed. Verify with your patron that this is in fact the doctor in question. Some doctors will in fact will carry more than one license
View the Record Step 4: Once you have confirmed the identity of the doctor with the patron, click on the doctors name and pull up the record for review. From the record you can see where the doctor is licensed, the license number, type, issue date, expiration date, and that there have been no legal actions taken against this doctor.
