Its content shall not be disclosed. 19.5.2009p7 TOP Risks & Issues (3/3) Area # DetailsStatus & Mitigation Detector Subsystem 6  ASIC fracture problem  Total noise  DQE drop  All current ASICs declared as not flight worthy  New production agreed between NASA and Teledyne  Pathfinder DS will be provided as surrogate  8 electrons (vs. 6) due to unstable/noisy bias voltage from ASIC  Tuning of ASIC has shown that the 6 electron requirement can be achieved, however the power requirements have not been achieved at the required noise requirement  Noise performance to be demonstrated in end-to-end subsystem  DQE drop on FM detectors has eroded the margin on sensitivity in certain wavelength areas. However, this drop may be due to test configurations and recent testing on two flight spare detectors show that they both meet DQE requirements at all wave lengths.

Its content shall not be disclosed. 19.5.2009p18 DS Status  Teledyne has completed all testing of the final four SCAs in the NIRSpec inventory.  Two devices failed testing and are clearly non-flight detectors  S058 and S060 exhibited good total noise and dark current performance and are candidate flight spare detectors  Preliminary Results (as analyzed by GSFC personnel):  Total Noise for S058 & S060 is 6.8e- rms and 6.4e- rms (Spec is 6e- rms)  Dark Current for S058 & S060 is 0.013e-/s and 0.012e-/s (Spec is 0.01e-/s)  DQE performance meets spec  The final results will be used to determine whether either or both devices meet the NIRSpec sensitivity requirement (S053 & S044 will also be included in this analysis).  The best two detectors will be used for the Flight Spare FPA Build.

Its content shall not be disclosed. 19.5.2009p19 DS Status  FPE to ASIC communication issues  Teledyne has determined that the issue can be solved by raising the common mode voltage to the ASIC  Working to change the common mode voltage (from 1.1 V to 1.8 V) supplied to the ASIC by the FPE  Meeting system noise/power requirements  The Detector Subsystem has not met both noise and power requirements during testing on the ETU and Pathfinder systems.  Noise requirements (<6e-) have been met, but at increased power dissipation from the ASIC. The ASICs being used on the Pathfinder Detector Subsystem have power dissipations of 14- 17mW versus a requirement of 10.5mW

Its content shall not be disclosed. 19.5.2009p20 MSS Status  Microshutter Array Status –5 flight candidate arrays have been integrated into quadrants – 4 of these 5 will be installed into the flight unit –Addtional arrays are in the process of testing and/or assembly – these will be used for flight spares  Mechanism status  Flight launch lock motors (qualification, flight, and flight spare) have been received and passed initial acceptance testing  Engineering Test Unit (ETU) magnet actuator successfully completed 2x (~100K) life cycles  Flight magnet actuators are scheduled to be delivered this month Microshutter Array

Its content shall not be disclosed. 19.5.2009p21 MSS Status  “Test Bed” Microshutter Control Electronics (MCE)  In final assembly and testing  Flight Microshutter Control Electronics (MCE) -Motor, Digital, and Analog Control Card (MDACC) is in assembly -Array Interface Card (AIC) will begin assembly following successful testing of the AIC test bed board. -CIC and Backplane are in testing -Power Control Assembly (PCA) assembly in progress.  Microshutter Shock -An updated specification with significantly reduced shock levels has been developed and flowed to the MSA -The MSA structural model has been tested at Astrium and the required shock levels were achieved -Shock testing on the qualification Microshutter Array will be performed at Astrium, Freidrichshafen Germany the week of May 25

Deliverable to NASA/STScI.  As far as possible, allow an early validation of some key NIRSpec operation and calibration concepts / schemes.  Wavelength calibration, target acquisition…  Major NIRSpec-level calibration items  Calibration of the “coordinate transforms” between the OTE focal plane and the detector plane (for TA !)  Calibration of the MOS spectrographic modes  Extensive and time-consuming calibration!  Classical spectrographic calibration steps  Calibration of the SLIT and IFU spectrographic modes.  Characterization of NIRSpec radiometric response
