1 Warm Up Name the 4 natural causes of global warming?
THEN explain how each adds to global warming What is the difference between global warming & green house effect?

2 Do Now Name the 4 natural causes of global warming?
Volcanic Eruptions- temporary cooling Weather Activity- El Nino & La Nina Solar activity- Sunspots = extra heat Earth’s Motions- Distance from the sun/Removes River basins What is the difference between global warming & green house effect? Greenhouse effect causes global warming. Global warming also concentrates on CO2, while greenhouse effect on all 5 gases.

5 To produce many of your common goods—computers, sneakers, water bottles, food—we burn fossil fuels.
5

6 Fossil fuels are energy sources made from the remains of dead plants and animals. The most commonly used fossil fuels are coal, oil/petroleum, and natural gas. 6

7 Burning these fossil fuels to make household products produces CO2 and this CO2 is released into the atmosphere. CO2 CO2 CO2 CO2 CO2 CO2 7

8 In the atmosphere this CO2 joins the other greenhouse gases
In the atmosphere this CO2 joins the other greenhouse gases. These greenhouse gases include things like methane, nitrous oxide, and water vapor. methane Nitrous oxide water vapor CO2 CO2 CO2 CO2 CO2 CO2 8

9 These gases are necessary because they act as a blanket and keep our planet warm.

10 However, when large amounts of CO2
enter the atmosphere it causes this layer to get thicker. CO2 CO2 CO2 CO2 CO2 CO2 methane Nitrous oxide water vapor 10

11 Think about it… In the summer, why does the inside of a car get very hot when it is sitting in the sun? The heat from the sun goes into the car. The windows on the car trap the heat inside. This makes the inside of the car heat up

12 Think back to our car? What happens if the windows get thicker?
12

13 As CO2 is added to the greenhouse gas layer, it becomes thicker
As CO2 is added to the greenhouse gas layer, it becomes thicker. As it becomes thicker, it traps in more of the Sun’s rays. And, just like your car, causes the earth to heat up! methane Nitrous oxide water vapor CO2 CO2 CO2 CO2 CO2 CO2 13

14 CONCLUSION: As CO2 levels increase, temperature levels increase

15 CCOMMON PITFALLS The ozone layer is created by global warming!
NO! It is formed by the release of carbon gases, not by the increase in temperature… Greenhouse gases are a bad thing… Only when there are too many!

16 FAST FACT! The human population of the world is expected to be nearly tripled by the year 2100

17 Urban Heat Islands How is heat affecting the daytime & nighttime differently in cities? How does “cooling roofing” help improve global warming? Why do more people use it as a strategy? Why are plants helpful in reducing global warming? (Hint: two processes plants do)    What is Charlotte NC specifically doing to help relieve global warming effects?

18 What’s being done now to reduce our emissions?
Wind Power Solar Power Fuel-Efficiency

19 5 Simple Things To Do Turn off your computer or the TV
when you’re not using it. Take shorter showers. Heating water uses energy. Keep rooms cool by closing the blinds, shades, or curtains. Turn off the lights when you leave a room. Use compact fluorescent bulbs.

20 What’s our class’s average Carbon Footprint and what does this mean?
Why does it take so many Earth’s to support our way of life? Okay, so how does that play out around the world??

21 What is your carbon footprint?

22 Exit Ticket Did you reach our objective? Lets find out?
SWBAT compare and contrast the human causes & naturally occurring causes of global warming Human Causes Natural Causes
