The Delta Works The Delta works is a construction that was built between 1950 and 1997 in the southwest of the Netherlands to protect a large area of land from the sea. The works has dams, sluices, locks, dikes and storm surge barriers. This building is located in the Dutch area( or more specifically,Rhino-Meuse Delta). This building protects floods. Now the Dutch government agrees that it is the worlds largest flood protection project. It became a wonder when the American Society of Civil Engineers has declared the works to become one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

Q & A Where is it located? It is located in the Netherlands, Europe. Did the government have to do anything with this? Yes,at first they wanted to built a closed dam,but then they did an open barrier. When was it officially open? On October 4th,1986. What was the cause of the Delta Works? The cause was that there were many floods in the Netherlands( one example is the North Sea flood). W Why is the Delta Works unique? It is unique because it saved people living in the Dutch area because there were too many floods. hen did it become a wonder? It became a wonder after the ASCE approved it to be one. How did the wonder come to be? It was built by many people. It was made by cement and dirt.

FACTS It is one of the seven wonders of the modern world. It is located in the Dutch area (Netherlands, Europe). It controls the floods for the Dutch. It was built there because of this cause. It stretches 1.75 miles across the three channels of he Easter Schelde. The dam consist of several strings of gates and their massive supporting piers which,in normal weather, allow tidal seawater to ebb and flow in the eastern estuary, thus benefiting the fish and bird life and local fisheries. It is also known as the North Sea Protection Works.

My Opinion I think that the Delta Works is a very special place because it is a real lifesaver. It helped people a lot. It controls the floods in the Dutch area, so now there arent many severe floods there. If it wasnt built it would have been a disaster by now. As I said, it is a lifesaver. Go Delta Works!

Glossary Storm surge barriers-another way to say storm surge barriers is to say flood gates, floodgates are adjustable gates to control water flow in river, stream or levee systems sluices- a sluice is a water channel that is controlled at its head by a gate, for example, a millrace is a sluice that channels water toward a water mill dikes- a dike is an artificial earthen wall, constructed as a defense or as a boundary locks- a lock is device used for raising and lowering boats between stretches of water of different levels on river and canal waterways ASCE- it stands for A AA American S SS Society of Civil E EE Engineers
