January 30, 2013 As soon as you enter... 1.Find your newly ASSIGNED seat. 2.In your NOTEBOOK, copy the F.Q. and L.G.’s on the side board. You have 4 minutes to complete BOTH tasks QUIETLY for a bonus point.

WHAT ARE THE 4 EARTH SYSTEMS/SPHERES?

WHAT IS DENSITY? How close together particles are packed in an object Its units are ml or g/cm 3 Size and shape do NOT affect density!!!

WHAT IS THE FORMULA FOR DENSITY?

SAMPLE DENSITY PROBLEM What is the mass of an object with a volume of 2cm 3 and a density of 10 g/cm 3 ?

WHAT IS THE EFFECT OF DENSITY? Less dense objects RISE More dense objects SINK – Think: “Dense is down”

WHAT AFFECTS DENSITY? 1.State of matter – Most objects are most dense as SOLIDS – Most objects are least dense as GASES 2.Water Temperature – WARM water is LESS dense – COLD water is MORE dense THINK!: Does cold water rise or sink?

WHAT IS THE STATE-OF-MATTER EXCEPTION? WATER!!! Water is most dense as a liquid and least dense as a solid. It is why SOLID ice floats in LIQUID water!!!

WHAT IS RATE OF CHANGE? Rate of change = change in value time CHANGE  what has been altered CYCLIC CHANGE  something predictable that changes but returns to its original

SAMPLE RATE OF CHANGE PROBLEM Four minutes after the experiment began, the car moved 800 m. Eight minutes after the experiment began, the car moved 1,200 m. What was the rate of change? Rate of change = 1,200 m - 800 m 8 min - 4 min = 400 m 4 min = 100 m/min

GRAPHING RELATIONSHIPS Direct relationship – As x increases, y increases (BOTH INCREASE) Inverse/Indirect relationship – As x increases, y decreases (ONE INCREASES, ONE DECREASES)

SAMPLE PROBLEM Do density and mass have a direct or indirect relationship?

Dynamic Equilibrium: When things are BALANCED WHAT IS DYNAMIC EQUILIBRIUM?

WHAT IS THE BIG BANG THEORY? The Big Bang Theory is a theory about the beginning of the universe.

WHAT IS THE UNIVERSE? The UNIVERSE is everything that exists—all space, matter and energy.

WHAT HAPPENED DURING THE BIG BANG? 14 billion years ago, all matter and energy was concentrated into an infinitely small point (singularity) All of a sudden, there was a gigantic expansion of space (the Big Bang)

WHAT IS THE UNIVERSE DOING NOW? The universe has been expanding in all directions ever since the Big Bang.

UNIT 1 TERMS 1.Rate of Change 2.Density 3.Big Bang Theory 4.Universe 5.Direct Relationship 6.Inverse/Indirect Relationship 7.Dynamic Equilibrium

As you are leaving... 1.Throw out any scraps and/or bring any supplies to my desk. HOMEWORK: Finish flipbook and study for quiz tomorrow! It will be given in the first 7 minutes of class You cannot make it up if you are late without a note The quiz will only involve writing the definition of 5 of the flipbook terms.
