Smart solutions for comfort and safety UL/CSA approval of small motors

Smart solutions for comfort and safety 2 Introduction UL / CSA approval of Saia- Burgess motors UL = Underwriters Laboratories Inc., US: an independent, not-for-profit product-safety testing and certification organization, first founded in 1894, second foundation in 1903, 123 UL centres worldwide, 62 laboratories and certification facilities, more than 71.000 companies use UL marks, Historical background: initiative from insurance companies Motivation: avoid fire (e.g. many houses made of wood) and other hazards More than 800 valid UL standards on safety developed 1,291 UL and 376 CSA standards for different products Approbation of products linked with factory inspection (each quarter or half a year)

Smart solutions for comfort and safety 3 UL 1004 / CSA100Electric Motors Creepage distance and clearances Insulation system power supply means box and/ or plastic material UL 863Time- Indicating and Recording Appliances previous applied standard – do not use for new motors UL 1446Electrical Insulation Systems (EIS) Thermal aging tests, dielecric strength,... Very extensive for untested materials – 12 to 18 month UL 2111 / CSA 77Thermal Overload Protection of Motors Impedance protected or Thermally protected motors UL 94Tests for Flammability of Plastic Materials Preselection testing Flammability classification (HB / V-2 / V-1 / V-0 / 5V) Standards UL / CSA approval of Saia- Burgess motors

Smart solutions for comfort and safety 4 UL Recognized Component Mark - specifically used on components that are part of a larger product or system - mark for insulation system inside motor - mark for our motor according at least one UL standard - for combined compliance to the Canadian and US Standard UL Listed Mark - mark for representative samples on end-products (customer) Marks UL / CSA approval of Saia- Burgess motors

Smart solutions for comfort and safety 5 Creation of a new Electrical Insulation System (EIS) - e.g. UL approval of existing motors - Long Term Aging Test - handling time 12 to 18 month - preferably to avoid Adaptation of an existing EIS - Selection of pre- certificated EIS from different plastic suppliers - e.g. DuPont offers actual 455 EIS under File E 69939 - use of these EIS is free of charge after authorisation - preferred for new developing motors Admission of “Minor Components” in existing EIS - upgrading of existing EIS only for Minor Components (lead wire, tape, motorplate...) - shortened “Sealed Tube Test” - handling time 6 weeks Procedure for obtaining UL approval UL / CSA approval of Saia- Burgess motors

Smart solutions for comfort and safety 6 Yellow Card UL / CSA approval of Saia- Burgess motors

Smart solutions for comfort and safety 7 Basis of calculation is not clear and offers increase year per year remarkably! strong differences depending on approach small differences according to country of application (Germany vs. US) Long duration for applications and difficult work with UL no clear definition of ways towards approbation (e.g. mix of insulation systems for UC) long time (e.g. 9 month for complete process between offer and end of project) result is not only based on standards (“It is not mathematics, it is UL.”) For improvement of work we invested in qualification of engineers and decided to work only direct with UL Germany for better understanding and cooperation. after we gained experience with two direct applications in US Conclusions UL / CSA approval of Saia- Burgess motors

Smart solutions for comfort and safety 8 Our preferred way: give our customer data of used materials (if not special know-how) for his own certification Advantage: no additional costs! Yellow card + minimum thickness This way was used successfully with motors and solenoids New motors >40 mm with UL 1004 / CSA 100 – Electric Motors If there are customer requests – application for UL1004 Motor design takes care of current UL 1004 requirements Motors <40 mm may not, <36 mm can not fulfil large UL clearance and creepage distances New designs usually use “free” UL - Insulation Systems from DuPont Is CSA 100 really necessary, it seems to double costs ? Avoid special standards, e.g. UL 2111 / CSA 77 or include fully in calculation of project Future: we discuss to establish a own insulation system (for Saia-Burgess new products or for whole Johnson) Summary UL / CSA approval of Saia- Burgess motors
