The Statue of Liberty In 1871 Frederic Auguste Bartholdi envisioned a statue to commemorate America’s 100 years of independence. The statue was a gift from France to America, because the French admired America’s democracy.

Bartholdi imagined the statue in New York’s harbor with a glowing torch to welcome voyagers.

The Statue of Liberty Seven spokes in the statue’s crown depicted the world’s seven seas and continents.

The Statue of Liberty Because the statue was made in France and needed to be transported to America, Bartholdi decided to make the skin of the statue out of copper, to keep the statue as light weight as possible.

The Statue of Liberty Over time, exposure to rain, humidity, and sun caused the copper to change to a green color. This is called patina.
