2 Last week our scheduled speaker was Victoria Bloodworth of Blue Cross Blue Shield and was to talk on “The Future Of Medicine”. Indeed, at the onset she said that this was to be our club’s 2 for 1 day as her quest Jon Haymann(CEO of Communities in Schools) would speak first about Jacksonville Schools. As it turned out, he was such a dynamic and enthusiastic speaker that time ran out before we could get to our scheduled speaker. However, as time was running out she said she was not going to speak today but at a later date. Jon Haymann was born in Greece, but was adopted at an early stage in life and says today that he is not a “Greek-American”, but that he is 100% American and that he loves this country. He said that while many people believe that poverty creates crime, Jacksonville is an example of the fact that poverty does not create crime. Indeed he says that here the high poverty schools are also the high proficiency schools, and that his organization is dedicated to helping kids prepare for life. –Al Russ Last Week Speaker This Week Happy Birthday! No less than a visiting group of four, composed of Kiwanians or a minimum of two Kiwanians plus members of a Circle K Club, Key Club, and/or Builders Club sponsored by the visiting Kiwanis club, must be in attendance. To qualify for inter-club credit, the meeting must be an official meeting of the host club. Conventions, division council meetings, and similar events do not normally qualify. History of Mother's Day In the United States of America Mother's Day was first suggested in the year 1872 by Julia Ward Howe who wrote the words to the Battle hymn of the Republic as a day dedicated to peace. She would hold an organized Mother's Day meeting in Boston, Massachusetts every year. It wasn't until in 1907 when Anna Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. Ms. Jarvis persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the 2nd Sunday of May. By the next year Mother's Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia. She and several of her supporters began to write to ministers, businessman, and politicians in their endeavor to establish a national Mother's Day. In 1910, the governor of West Virginia proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day and a year later every state celebrated it. It was successful as by 1911 Mother's Day was celebrated in almost every state. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day as a national holiday that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May. At the Board Meeting on Monday, Ralph Marcello was installed as the new treasurer, and Butch Shadwell was selected to finish Paul Myers’ term on the Board. AMAZING MAZE
