2. Overview CBFWA staff reviewed the November 2006 CBFWA Status of the Resource Summary Report Identified gaps in the data management system Suggest questions that the Council members may wish to consider in their upcoming FY08-09 data management project funding decisions

3. Background The Status of the Resources Project (SOTR) gathered data for focal populations from each subbasin plan: Biological objective(s) for each population, Current status and trend in abundance (indicator) for each focal population, The information was presented, by subbasin, in a standardized format.

4. Data 58 subbasins 31 distinct focal fish species 281 individual focal populations, or population groupings Biological objectives were not consistently reported

5. Data Acquisition CBFWA staff mined data from all available sources StreamNet was the primary source Data was obtained directly from data collectors Currently much of the data sits on a computer at CBFWA

6. Data Sources 40% of data provided by the StreamNet project 11% of data provided by Fish Passage Center (mainstem passage data) 30% of the data were obtained directly from the state fish and wildlife agencies 12% of data was provided by tribal entities 5% was provided by federal agencies 3% was provided by a private utility

8. Types of Data Status and trend data were reported for 51% of the focal populations Snapshot data (i.e, single year index surveys or presence absence data) were reported for 10% of the populations Data were not reported for approximately 39% of the focal populations

9. Conclusions SOTR project should NOT become another data warehouse project Resident fish data is poorly represented and needs better support Tribal data is poorly represented and needs better support

10. Questions for the Council What are the priority data needs for the Council? Should BPA fund a channel steward to support those needs? Should StreamNet be used as the primary fish data management project for the Program? What is the most cost effective means for accessing tribal data?
