4 There is no established convention for the designation of "developed" and "developing" countries or areas in the United Nations system. The designations "developed" and "developing" are intended for statistical convenience and do not necessarily express a judgment about the stage reached by a particular country or area in the development process. There is criticism of the use of the term ‘developing country’. The term implies inferiority of a 'developing country' compared to a 'developed country', which many countries dislike. It assumes a desire to ‘develop’ along the traditional 'Western' model of economic development which a few countries, such as Cuba, have chosen not to follow. The description implies that societies should be transitioning away from primary economic activities into the tertiary and quaternary sectors, BUT Some countries are major economic players reliant on agricultural business. Some of the country could have thriving industrial centers and high standards f living with other areas living in abject poverty.
