Objectives/Impacts of EWS Programme To provide timely and effective information, through identified institutions, that allows individuals exposed to a hazard to take action to avoid or reduce their risk and prepare for effective response, thus leading to the following impacts/outcomes: Enhanced adaptation to Climate variability and Climate Change Reduction of vulnerability to climate related hazards Capacity building at a local and Regional levels Kenya Met Service

3 Challenge The world is experiencing more frequent and severe climatic shocks There is no proper interface where knowledge in Policy, Demography and Meteorology in considered Reduction of Vulnerability through weather forecasting, climate prediction and EWS Kenya Met Service

4 current needs Address deficiencies in Capacity human and technological capacities at all levels Development of Actionable programmes at National and societal level Development of decision support tools at community levels Development of modern information systems eg The mobile phone Upgrade/Improve existing EWS Kenya Met Service

5 Where? Regional level Greater Horn of Africa Region (IGAD) Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania. National Level - Kenya ASAL areas Flood Prone areas (Nzoia, Nyando, lower Tana, Gucha, Lumi river basins) Kenya Met Service
