3 MARK UPS/MARK DOWNS Markup is one kind of percent increase. Original cost + Markup = Retail Price Markdown or discount is a percent decrease. Original price – Markdown = Sale Price

4 EXAMPLE #1 MARKUP/MARKDOWN A sports store buys skateboards from a supplier for $35 with a 42% markup. What is the retail price of the skateboards? $35 (100%) METHOD 1 METHOD 2 Step 1: Find 42% of 35 (Markup). Convert % to decimal. Step 2: Original cost + Markup = Retail price Step 1: Find 142% of 35. Convert % to decimal. ? (42%) $14.70 (42%)

5 EXAMPLE #2 MARKUP/MARKDOWN A discount store marks down all of its holiday merchandise by 20% off the regular selling price. Find the discounted selling price of decorations that regular sell for $16. $16 (100%) METHOD 1 METHOD 2 Step 1: Find 20% of $16 (Markdown). Convert % to decimal. Step 2: Original price – Markdown=Sale Price Step 1: Find 80% of 50. Convert % to decimal. 20% off 80% Sale price $12.80 (20%)
