4 Language Arts Overview Quarter 1: Narrative Reading/Writing Quarter 2: Explanatory/Cause and Effect Quarter 3: Argumentative Quarter 4: Research *Nonfiction literature, grammar, and vocabulary will be taught throughout the year.

6 Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) Students’ reading levels will be assessed using the SRI. The SRI will generate a list of recommended reading based on the student reading level and subject interests. Students are encouraged to read a balance of fiction and nonfiction material.

7 History Overview Quarter 1: Early Man & Ancient Mesopotamia Quarter 2: Ancient Egypt/Israel Quarter 3: Ancient India/China Quarter 4: Ancient Greece/Rome

8 Suggested Materials One 3 subject notebook for Language Arts - we will glue loose pages into the notebook. -notebook will be graded weekly/monthly -gluestick -colored pencils Four 1 subject notebooks for History (1 for each quarter) - we will glue loose pages into the notebook. -notebook will be graded weekly/monthly

9 Grading 10% class work/participation 80% tests/quizzes/projects 10% homework

10 Homework District guidelines state that a sixth grader shall have no more than two hours of homework each night. Homework will be Monday-Thursday Homework can be found… -Minder Binder -Teacher’s Board -Teacher’s website

11 Academic Preparation (AP) AP is Mon, Tues, Thur, and Fri (30min) AP is a time to….. Go to teachers for extra help Go to teachers to get make up work Go to a study session for an upcoming test or quiz Quietly read or study Students MUST go to one of their teachers Students MUST have a silent reading book & minder binder with them for AP

12 Absent or Late Work If a student is absent, it is their responsibility to see me when they return for make up assignments. They can also check red box for classwork, and red pockets for homework. Homework is also available on my website. Absent work can be made up for full credit. (same number of days) Late work must be turned in by end of grading period. The highest grade late work will receive is a “C”.
