Our Math Community  Building Concepts – We understand mathematical aspects of situations, or we mathematize, by seeing and making math drawings to visualize the mathematics and relate these to our explanations.  Math Drawings – We can use math drawings to help show our thinking, relate our drawings to math language, and justify our reasoning.  Math Talk & Listening - Through math talk we explain our thinking and ask questions. When we are active listening, we are thinking about what a person is saying so that we could explain it our self or help them explain it more clearly. Also, we need to listen so that we can ask a question or help the explainer.  Helping Community – Everyone is a learner and a teacher, and helps each other to understand and explain. Everyone makes mistakes, and we thank people who make mistakes because it helps us all learn how to recognize and correct mistakes.  Student Leaders – Everyone is expected to be a leader in math class. Student leaders help their classmates math class. Student leaders help their classmates understand or explain concepts and skills in class discussions, understand or explain concepts and skills in class discussions, small groups or pair work. small groups or pair work.

The Eight Mathematical Practices The goal is to help students develop a mathematical mindset and see math in the world around them. #1 – Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them solving them #2 – Reason abstractly and quantitatively #3 – Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others reasoning of others #4 – Model with mathematics #5 – Use appropriate tools strategically #6 – Attend to precision #7 – Look for and make use of structure #7 – Look for and make use of structure #8 – Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning #8 – Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

Math Journals n It is a personalized textbook, created by students, used to strengthen student learning through participation. n Every student will be required to maintain a math journal, one for each quarter, that will be graded. n It is a working portfolio used to keep track of learning, and allows students to easily access work and notes. n Students that maintain and use their math journal perform well.  Journals should be taken home nightly to assist with homework.  Journals can be used on all quizzes and tests.

Homework n Math homework will be given nightly to reinforce the skills and concepts taught in class. n Homework is to be done in their Math Journals. n Each homework assignment is worth 2 points. If an assignment is not done in it’s entirety or if they do not meet the criteria below, then students only get half credit n Criteria for FULL credit: –Number the problems. –Skip two spaces in between each problem. –ALWAYS copy the problem, except word problems. Copy the problem even if you can solve it mentally. –Show ALL your work. –Circle your final answer. – -Label your answers, when necessary. - Write the answer to a word problem in a complete sentence.

Informal Assessments  Checkpoints at the end of each section in each chapter (graded homework assignments, parents are allowed to check them over)  Periodical Quizzes  End of the Chapter Tests  High-Level Math Tasks related to the Conceptual Unit

Ten Marks n n TenMarks is an online math tool. It will be incorporated to help students practice skills and explore new topics. Every Monday, students will be given a new assignment that will need to be completed by the following Sunday evening. I will examine each student's needs before assigning a lesson. This way, each student will be challenged at his or her own level. n n If technology is an issue, please let me know and I will make arrangements so that your child can complete these weekly assignments at school during activity period.

SV Portal Grade Book Grades are weighted according to the following percentages: -Math Journals – 10% -Homework – 20% -Quizzes – 30% -Tests – 40%

Supporting Your Child in Math n Check webpage for nightly homework n Monitor progress thru SV Grade Book on the SV Portal n To assist in homework: -Handbook – notes and activities from class -Journals – assignments -Textbook - on-line -Lessons & Notes - webpage n Keep the conversation going: -Ask what the focus question and learning -Ask what the focus question and learning goals were for the lesson goals were for the lesson - Look for “word problems” in real life - Look for “word problems” in real life and solve together talking about different and solve together talking about different strategies strategies
