3 1.Produce a multimedia presentation using Kid Pix Studio Deluxe. 2.Illustrate a favorite or award winning book. 3.Build and sharpen skills necessary to use electronic media effectively I used this lesson to enable fifth grade students to:

4 1.4 Create simple documents by using electronic media and employing organizational features(e.g. passwords, entry and pull-down menus, word searches, thesaurus, spell checks). 1.6 Edit and revise manuscripts to improve the meaning and focus of writing by adding, deleting, consolidating, clarifying, and rearranging words and sentences. These are the Standards my Lesson Addressed English Language Arts – Writing Strand Fifth Grade

5 1.Using Kid Pix Studio Deluxe students will create a multimedia presentation effectively combining graphics and text in an informative, attractive layout. Assessment by teacher/student developed rubric. 2.Students will demonstrate skill in using graphic production tools available in Kid Pix Program. Measured by pre and post checklist. 3.Students will increase skills in using pull-down menu features (i.e. save, edit, font changes) and in use of word processing feature of this software. Measured by teacher observation. 4.Students will demonstrate skill in summarizing significant events and details of the selected book and will articulate clearly the situations, setting, characters and plots using appropriate descriptive language. Measured by score on rubric. My Instructional Objectives for this Lesson

6 Session 1 Give Pretest(Treasure Hunt) Show sample slide shows Brainstorm topics Show Storyboard Worksheet Work on Session 2 Review tools and skills from pretest Teach new tools Begin storyboard and script worksheet Session 3 Review tools Teach New tools and pull down menu items(save, edit stamps) Show rubric and demo student page Session 4 Review all tools Check finished Storyboards and scripts Make title slide Session 5 View a few title slides Critique using tips and rubric Work on slides Session 6 View “How to Make A Slide Show” from Kid Pix Resource Disk Work on slides Session 7 Review Sounds and Transitions Begin to assemble slide shows Edit slides Session 8 Continue to edit and polish slide shows. Use peer critique Give post Test(Treasure Hunt) Session 9 Present slide shows to audience Take as much time as needed Assess finished product with rubric This was our timeline of activities

9 1.The finished slide show product was a great motivator for students to become more skillful in using the graphics tools in Kid Pix. 2.Being able to summarize important details and present them in a coherent, logical manner is a skill which must be addressed more with my students. 3.This activity is a great “warm-up” for Hyperstudio and PowerPoint. 4.Students accomplished the standards outlined in the project while increasing their technology skills AND found the process stimulating and enjoyable. (Measured by teacher judgment!!) A few of my conclusions

10 Do this more than once during the year. Try students working in groups. Use this form of reporting in other areas of the curriculum, i.e. science, social studies Try to communicate with other students using the same program How would I extend the value of this experience for my students?
