3 History Madhya Pradesh occupies perhaps the oldest part of the subcontinent. Close to Bhopal at Bhimbetka are the pre-historic caves that preserve some fascinating paintings dating back to Paleolithic times. Experts have concluded that these are at least as old as the specimen at Pyrnees. This was perhaps one of the earliest dwellings of human beings.

4 Near Bhopal again, at Sanchi, one can see the votive pillar installed by the Greek Heliodorus which testifies to the fact that this region was exposed to cosmopolitan influences in the centuries before the birth of Christ. The grand stupa at Sanchi marks an important stage in the evolution of Indian architecture built by Emperor Ashoka the Great.
