5 The FFA Mission  FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agriculture education.

6 To accomplish the FFA Mission, FFA:  Develops competent and assertive agricultural leadership  Increases awareness of the global and technological importance of agriculture and its contribution to our well-being  Strengthens the confidence of agriculture students in themselves and their work.

12 Symbols and their meaning  Eagle – national scope of FFA  Plow – labor and tillage of the soil  Owl – knowledge and wisdom  Rising sun – progressive nature of agriculture and the need for cooperative effort to reach common goals

13 Symbols and their meaning  Cross section of ear of corn – unity, FFA is a national organization with member from across the US and Puerto Rico  Lettering “Agricultural Education” and “FFA” – signifies the combination of learning and leadership

14 Program of Activities (POA)  A calendar of activities that provides fun opportunities for members, creates a better chapter and provides service to the community.

15 FFA Officers  President (Rising sun) – presides over meetings  Vice President (Plow) – coordinates all committee work  Secretary (Ear of corn) – keeps records of all meetings

19 FFA Creed  Use  Basic statement of beliefs that helps members understand the importance of FFA  Expresses beliefs in work ethic, fairness to others, patriotism, tradition that all member should share  New members are required to learn the creed before they are given their greenhand degree

26 Career Development Events  Competitive events in FFA  Levels  Chapter  District  Region  State  National  Their purpose is to develop technical skills and leadership abilities  1 st place wins at state competition= recognition and prize money

27 CDE Examples  Dairy evaluation – grade and evaluate dairy cattle  Poultry evaluation – grade and evaluate chickens and chicken products  Floriculture – knowledge of floral arrangement and horticulture  Extemporaneous speaking – prepare a speech on an agricultural topic in 30 minutes and present

28 CDE Examples  Livestock Judging – Grade and evaluate beef cattle, sheep and swine  Horse Judging – grade and evaluate horses and present oral reasons  Introduction to horticulture – knowledge of horticulture and plant identification  Nursery/landscape – knowledge of the nursery and landscape industry and plant identification

29 CDE Examples  Creed speaking – recitation of the FFA creed  Prepared public speaking – present a 6 – 8 minute speech on an agriculturally related topic of your choice  Parliamentary procedure – present a mock business meeting

30 CDE Examples  Forestry – identification of trees and forestry tools as well as measurement of trees  Agricultural tools and materials – knowledge and identification of tools  Agricultural mechanics – knowledge of agricultural mechanics as well as performance of specific mechanical skills

31 CDE Examples  Job interview – performance of a mock interview for an agriculturally related job  Agricultural sales – knowledge of sales and marketing  Farm business management – solve business problems and knowledge of business principles
