Procedures are a step-by-step sequence describing how to complete an experiment.
Procedures describe what needs to be done to complete the experiment, including: How the independent variable (IV) will be changed (CG & EG) How the dependent variable (DV) will be measured How all other variables will be maintained at a constant value (CV)
Plant Experiment Example: 1.Set up three pots, each containing 150 g of Brand X soil. 2.Plant 5 bean seeds in each pot. 3.Water each pot with 100 mL of tap water. 4.Add no fertilizer to Pot #1, add 5 g of Fancy brand fertilizer to Pot #2 and 10 g of fertilizer to Pot #3. 5.Measure (in cm) the height of each plant once a week for a total of 6 weeks.
In this procedure: 1.Steps 1-3 show what is the same for each test. (Constants) 2.Step 4 tells what is different for each test (Testing Groups) 3.Step 5 identifies what result will be measured. (Results)
Make My Picture 1.Get the colors blue, green and yellow 2.Then color blue the 8 middle triangles 3.Color green the 6 triangles that share a line with the blue triangles 4.Finally, you color the rest of the triangles yellow
Make your Picture Using the procedure rules write directions for coloring either your or your table mates picture. Work together to make them as detailed as possible We will switch procedures with someone else in the room and they will have to make your picture When you are finished coloring, compare the original your and leave feedback for the team writing the procedures (both + and - )
Legos Gather blocks into two bags the same color – must have no more than 10 blocks in each bag – the blocks in both bags must be the same Build something Write procedures for building your masterpiece cover masterpiece with cloth, leaving the other bag and your procedures behind switch with someone else who is finished When finished building compare your product to theirs and provide feedback on their directions
Exit Ticket Evaluate your procedure writing skills. What did you do well? What didnt you do well?
