Programs to provide relief & help the country recover from the Great Depression p Social Security Act -$ for retired workers -$ for unemployed -payroll taxes fund this program today 2. Tennessee Valley Authority (p. 706) – helped poor farmers in NC & TN 3. AAA – paid farmers to cut production

CCC – jobs for young men 18 – 25 thought FDR was abusing his power thought govt was interfering too much in business & personal lives 1 powerful opponent was Huey Long –he wanted more help for families instead of businesses

Different people began to lead the government courts ruled that many of his programs were unconstitutional FDR wanted to be able to add more judges – ones that would agree with his plans: COURT PACKING MANY people disagreed with this plan, hurt his popularity Frances Perkins – 1 st woman to be a Secretary in the Cabinet (Labor) Eleanor Roosevelt – FDRs wife who became his eyes and ears to problems & supported womens causes

15 warm up 3/26/12 If the New Deal didnt fix the Great Depression, then why is it remembered as a significant government program? It gave people hope that the government was trying to help. It provided jobs and welfare for those needing it the most. It did great public work like parks, highways, electricity to rural areas. We still benefit today from some of the projects. We still have Social Security and banking insurance today.
