BES++ - Standards Adoption through Open Source Chris Smith Platform Computing
© Platform Computing Inc. 2008 2 What is BES++ BES++ is an open source implementation of OGSA-BES from Platform Computing http://bespp.sourceforge.net GPL license Contributions from UVA (Martys group) Goals of the BES++ project Provide a reference implementation of OGSA-BES that is compliant with the HPC Basic Profile. Provide this implementation as Open Source Software, in order to encourage the adoption of the standards. Become a vehicle for the development of extensions to the OGSA-BES specifications according to the needs of the HPC and Grid computing communities. Provides the basis for Platform Computings forthcoming product support for the HPC Basic Profile. initial QAed version of the BES service will be available with LSF 7 Update 3
© Platform Computing Inc. 2008 3 Details The implementation uses gSOAP for the SOAP and WSDL processing. It can be built on pretty much any POSIX-like system. primarily developed on Linux and Mac OS X Both BES service and client code is included. code is fully compliant with HPC Basic Profile (modulo bugs :-) ) current code base used for SC07 interoperability demo It implements a stateless gateway to back end resource management systems. trying to keep the implementation simple current version supports LSF versions 6.x and 7 plan to support multiple resource management systems Supports both username/password and X.509 client authentication. username/password uses Linux PAM on the back end X.509 clients mapped to a single user name Contains preliminary support for ftp file staging.
© Platform Computing Inc. 2008 4 Future Work Support the HPC File Staging Profile adds support for http and scp to the current ftp file staging Prototype current extension ideas including Application Templates and Kerberos support Need to define an RM abstraction layer. current LSF support and PBS support contributed by UVA will be implemented using this layer would like to also support SGE Open to ideas and suggestions!
