IST- 2001-320015 3rd OAForum workshop - Berlin - 27th-29th March 2003 - Breakout Session: Tools and Implementation Issues Own Implementations reasons often: just do not know about existing tools early implementors sometimes easier to solve special problems (do not have to adapt existing tools) want to re-use existing systems specialists for certain programming languages / data bases

IST- 2001-320015 3rd OAForum workshop - Berlin - 27th-29th March 2003 - Breakout Session: Tools and Implementation Issues Using Existing Tools reasons all-in-one-package support (mailing lists etc.) open source eprints.org (Southampton University) most used tool seems to be best package solution DSpace (MIT) –too complicated to install –provides only googlish search

IST- 2001-320015 3rd OAForum workshop - Berlin - 27th-29th March 2003 - Breakout Session: Tools and Implementation Issues Technological Issues Search Engines vs. Dynamic Information blind hole can be closed by the OAI-PMH Language problems occur for service providers should have translation services

IST- 2001-320015 3rd OAForum workshop - Berlin - 27th-29th March 2003 - Breakout Session: Tools and Implementation Issues Organisational Issues Definition of Sets How should sets be defined using OAI? Necessary: Agreements above the protocol (e.g. CIMI) including syntax (set names) and semantics (meaning) service provider & universal set definitions for museums / media community not existent: probably task for CIMI

IST- 2001-320015 3rd OAForum workshop - Berlin - 27th-29th March 2003 - Breakout Session: Tools and Implementation Issues Special Presentations AdLIB Information Systems search engine and internet server (display collections) provide OAI interface (2.0 not complete yet, 1.1 fully implemented and tested) possibility to define mapping between internal database and metadata fields Ukrainian Catholic University (Institute of Church History) several multimedia projects (images, recordings...) not yet OAI compatible but: interested in Open Access
