4 Priorities of the Long Range Plan

5 Recommendations of the LRP I.We recommend completion of the 12 GeVCEBAF Upgrade at Jefferson Lab. The Upgrade will enable new insights into the structure of thenucleon, the transition between the hadronicand quark/gluon descriptions of nuclei, andthe nature of confinement. II.We recommend construction of the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), a world- leading facility for the study of nuclear structure, reactions, and astrophysics. Experiments with the new isotopes produced at FRIB will lead to a comprehensive description of nuclei, elucidate the origin of the elements in the cosmos, provide an understanding of matter in the crust of neutron stars, and establish the scientific foundation for innovative applications of nuclear science to society. III.We recommend a targeted program of experiments to investigate neutrino properties and fundamental symmetries. These experiments aim to discover the nature of the neutrino, yet-unseen violations of time-reversal symmetry, and other key ingredients of the New Standard Model of fundamental interactions. Construction of a Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory is vital to U.S. leadership in core aspects of this initiative. IV.The experiments at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider have discovered a new state of matter at extreme temperature and densitya quark-gluon plasma that exhibits unexpected, almost perfect liquid dynamical behavior. We recommend implementation of the RHIC II luminosity upgrade, together with detector improvements, to determine the properties of this new state of matter. 1. Complete the 12 GeV CEBAF upgrade 2. 6 New physics reach provided by the 12 GeV CEBAF Upgrade: Nuclear tomography to discover and explore the three-dimensional structure of the nucleon The search for exotic mesonsa quark and an anti-quark held together by gluons, but unlike conventional mesons, the gluons are excited Physics beyond the Standard Model via high precision studies of parity violation The spin and flavor dependence of valence parton distributionsthe heart of the proton, where its quantum numbers are determined The structure of atomic nuclei, exploring how the valence quark structure is modified in a dense nuclear medium Implementing the recommendations of the Long Range Plan 23 Hall D, Feb 17th

S. nuclear science has an ambitious long range plan that advances the science across 3 focus areas (QCD, Nuclei & Nuclear Astrophysics, Fundamental Symmetries &Neutrinos) Investment is being made toward major facility improvements or new construction Investment in scientific tools to capitalize on facility investments Exciting time for U.S. scientific community with an Administration that is strongly committed to science!
