5/18/2000Ray Daley, Data Visualization Technology, presentation at SOASIS SOASIS Chapter Meeting Southern Ohio Chapter American Society for Information Science Data Visualization Technology Ray Daley NEXIS Research and Development 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 18, 2000 LEXIS-NEXIS, Dayton, OH

5/18/2000Ray Daley, Data Visualization Technology, presentation at SOASIS !WARNING! Please note that this presentation was very dynamic in that we experienced many live demonstrations and several videos. This powerpoint only contains simple screen shots it contain very little of the information presented verbally during the session. Thus, there are scant desciptions of the approaches, benefits, problems, principles, or other useful information about the field. Please refer to the following book for an excellent persective. Readings in Information Visualization : Using Vision to Think (Morgan Kaufmann Series in Interactive Technologies) by Stuart K. Card, Jock D. MacKinlay (Editor), Ben Shneiderman (Editor)

5/18/2000Ray Daley, Data Visualization Technology, presentation at SOASIS Agenda Why, What, and How of Data Visualization Scientific and Business Visualization Visualization for Information Retrieval View Based Searching/Faceted Classification Discussion

5/18/2000Ray Daley, Data Visualization Technology, presentation at SOASIS Why Visualize Readings in Information Visualization : Using Vision to Think (Morgan Kaufmann Series in Interactive Technologies) by Stuart K. Card, Jock D. MacKinlay (Editor), Ben Shneiderman (Editor) The real power comes from devising external aids that enhance cognitive abilities. The purpose of visualization is insight, not pictures. The main goals are discovery, decision making, and explanation. Information visualization is useful to the extent that it increases our ability to perform these and other cognitive activities.

5/18/2000Ray Daley, Data Visualization Technology, presentation at SOASIS What is it Readings in Information Visualization : Using Vision to Think (Morgan Kaufmann Series in Interactive Technologies) by Stuart K. Card, Jock D. MacKinlay (Editor), Ben Shneiderman (Editor) Visualization: The use of computer-supported, interactive, visual representations of data to amplify cognition. Scientific and Business Visualization: The use of Visualization on data that are usually physically based. Information Visualization: The use of visualization on abstract data.

5/18/2000Ray Daley, Data Visualization Technology, presentation at SOASIS Conclusion and Discussion Visualization for scientific and business analysis and communication is obviously very successful. What about Information Retrieval? The primary task for todays information retrieval end users is to find what they are looking for. They type in a few words in a search box and go. They browse one page of answers and try a new search. Is there a Viz tool that will help them?
