Getting Started Supplies need to be organized in a child-friendly fashion. For example, containers that have pencils, erasers, rulers, calculators, scissors and number grids. Materials for workshop rotations should be placed in separate bins (worksheets, game pieces or additional math supplies)

Getting Started Rules and procedures need to be taught the first few weeks of workshop (like Readers Workshop) Set out three different math games that students are already familiar with from previous instruction. Review the instructions for each game and what configuration to play the game (pairs, foursomes or whole table). Talk about general rules for group activities and acceptable noise levels. Explain that each game rotation lasts for ten minutes. When they hear the timer bell they have one minute to finish, straighten their table and get ready to rotate. Students rotate clockwise to the next game table. Randomly divide the class into three groups and send each group to a game. For this practice session, monitor all tables and help with the transition from game to game. After completing the rotations, bring the students to the floor and discuss what went well and what could be better. Based on the student comments, compile a list of rules that can be modified as needed over the next two weeks.

Small group instruction is always based on data (Unit Assessments, student interviews or conferences, anecdotal notes, teacher observations, etc.) Data will point to student misconceptions, error patterns, and levels of understanding (see Depth of Knowledge/Bloom’s) Groups should be flexible. Definition Components Math Workshop Examples Non-Examples Materials Participants’ responses can be recorded either on poster paper or on the computer by escaping PPT show (hit the ESC KEY) and then entering responses into the slide’s boxes. Before starting the workshop, remove PPT tool bars for a clean look, have single title slide showing before starting Slideshow mode so only this slide appears when clicking out of slideshow mode. Slide boxes are set to enter brief responses in the line below each label. When finished entering responses, click on Slideshow icon and proceed. Time: 5-10 minutes. Facilitator It is important at the outset of the workshop that teachers who perceive their role to be a lecturer with a “one-size-fits-all” approach must clearly see that this guidebook espouses a different role. This activity addresses the desired role of the teacher. State that one strategy in the guidebook is about creating a concept organizer for a key term. This is the Frayer model (on this slide). We will embed another strategy called Think-Pair-Share to enter information in each of the four boxes to fully define what is meant by ‘guided learning.’ Assign each table team one box to define “guided learning.” Ask participants to think silently for 30 seconds about their answers, and then share within their group (variation of Pair) for two minutes. Final “share” is achieved by entering groups’ answers into the boxes. After all groups have responded, invite anyone to add ideas. Comment and fill gaps in the definition as appropriate. Here for discussion purposes is one definition of guided learning. The teacher does just lecture, giving information to students, answering students’ questions, and telling students when they are correct or incorrect. The teacher guides students to find correct answers on their own, usually through small group explorations and discussions. Guidance may involve limited direct instruction coupled with monitoring groups, providing cues, and asking thought-provoking questions. Often the teacher starts by introducing an authentic, interesting problem or phenomenon to the class, and then student groups explore and explain. 30

**Last Thoughts Math Workshop may not happen every day**

Some content or activities can be tiered or differentiated such that the whole class is doing the same activity at the same time Common planning is a great way to combine your resources and years of expertise I am here to help!
