3 Phonemic Awareness The ability to hear, identify, and play with individual sounds or phonemes in spoken words The ability to manipulate sounds including the ability to rhyme. It is the best predictor of success in learning to read. Patricia Cunningham, et al Phonemic awareness is the foundation of successful research-based reading instruction.

4 Phonics The knowledge that there is a systematic and predictable relationship between the letters of written language and the sound of spoken language

5 Fluency The ability to read orally with speed, accuracy, and proper expression Fluency provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension, enabling readers to recognize words and comprehend text at the same time.

6 Vocabulary The words we must know to communicate effectively

9 Learning Styles Young learners, especially, must have experiences manipulating text Research has proven that concepts are easier to understand and are held in memory longer when a concept has been introduced and practiced through the use of manipulatives Children also improve fine-motor skills when they use manipulatives
