2. A hero in the making David Ortiz was born in the Dominican republic on November 18, 1975 and graduated from Estudia Espallat High School. He was a very athletic boy growing up. He played basketball baseball and soccer. His two favorite sports were baseball and basketball. He always hoped to turn pro in one of these sports. Finally, in 1992 he was signed to the Seattle Mariners as a back up designated hitter.
