3 “ Committed to Excellence ” Why a National Agenda? Or, why do we have a National Agenda? The question is why wouldn’t we?

4 “ Committed to Excellence ” What is the NACM National Agenda? A set of priorities developed to be a “touchstone” for NACM’s leadership in its education, training, advocacy. Developed through research and outreach to and input from state association leaders and NACM members. Intended to drive NACM priorities for the period 2015-2020.

5 “ Committed to Excellence ” Maintaining the National Agenda The 2015-2020 version is the third iteration of NACM’s National Agenda The National Agenda Subcommittee continues the dialogue to ensure the agenda is relevant and incorporated in NACM activities The State Association Committee looks to measure the effect of the National Agenda at the state level and receive ongoing feedback

13 “ Committed to Excellence ” National Agenda Priorities are Competency Based Advance Excellence in Court Management Effective management of the courts requires a focus on all the essentials of court management including personnel, budget and facilities, and caseflow. Caseflow management has expanded to include the multi-faceted approaches necessary to resolve all case types timely. Courts must continue to provide essential services despite tightening budgets while being held accountable for their performance.

14 “ Committed to Excellence ” National Agenda Priorities are Competency Based Promote Fair and Accessible Justice Courts must be open to all as a venue for dispute resolution. Ethical behavior is at the forefront of all that courts do. Special populations, such as the disabled, elderly and those with limited English proficiency must have full and equal access to the courts.

15 “ Committed to Excellence ” National Agenda Priorities are Competency Based Develop Leaders for Tomorrow's Challenges Effective governance of our courts is critical to ensuring our courts are accountable. Today’s courts need sound succession planning and transference of institutional knowledge is critical to ensure their continued success. Court leaders must be skilled to lead today’s complex and diverse organizations.

16 “ Committed to Excellence ” National Agenda Priorities are Competency Based Utilize Technology to Promote Best Practices Technology, properly implemented, can streamline processes and allow greater access to the courts. In the advent of “e-everything” courts must ensure that everyone’s rights are protected appropriately. Sound, practical business practices should drive all technology efforts.

17 “ Committed to Excellence ” National Agenda Priorities are Competency Based Enhance Public Perceptions of the Courts Public trust and confidence in the courts is critical to their functioning in society. Partnering with the community and other branches and governmental agencies is necessary in today’s interlinked world. Courts must reach out to the community, share information, promote civics education and explain the unique role of the courts.

Reflect key judicial branch needs and interests Can spark discussion and innovation, and support the institutionalization of promising practices Can guide courts in identifying and working through challenges, brainstorming solutions, and developing meaningful strategies and partnerships to improve the administration of justice The National Agenda priorities …

19 “ Committed to Excellence ” National Agenda Priorities In Action  FOCUS  FOCUS essential and interested parties on activities and issues of public importance.  ALIGN  ALIGN the efforts of groups with common interests.  ACTIVATE  ACTIVATE these efforts for the good of our profession and the public we serve.
