Lesson Plan Starter - Think Pair share - 1 min to think about the question, 2min to discus it with partner 2min to share with the class Met rate Activity Fat to muscle Inherited factors

What do know about Respiration? Write everything you remember in you book about respiration You have 2 minutes

Learning Objectives All will be able to Define metabolic rate. Most will be able to describe what affects metabolic rate and the benefits of regular exercise. Some will be able to describe the relationships between food intake, exercise and fitness. Keywords Metabolism Metabolic rate

What is Metabolic rate?  Humans are made of lots of cells.  Each cell carries out lots of chemical reactions including respiration (which releases energy from food) and making proteins.  Together, these chemical reactions are known as the metabolism.  The rate at which these chemical reactions go on is the metabolic rate.

Think – Pair – Share Why two people sitting will have different metabolic rates and use up different amounts of energy? Starter - Energy needs  Your metabolic rate is the rate at which chemical reactions take place in your cells. End

Why different energy needs?? genetic factors Men usually have faster metabolic rates than women. Why? Muscle cells need more energy The less exercise you take and the warmer it is, the less food you need. If you exercise your metabolic rate stays high for some time after you have finished.

Metabolic rate The rate at which all the chemical reactions in the cells of the body are carried out (the metabolic rate) varies depending upon: - amount of activity you do (exercise and your job ) -proportion of muscle to fat (regular exercise builds muscle ) - inherited factors

Metabolic rate Task 1 - Fill in the gaps Chemical reactions in cells are collectively called _____________. The rate at which all the chemical reactions are carried out is your ______________. Your metabolic rate varies with: - the amount of __________ you do - the proportion of muscle to ______ in your body - and may also depend on ___________ factors

Learning Objectives All will be able to Define what metabolism and metabolic rate is. Most will be able to describe what affects metabolic rate and the benefits of regular exercise. Some will be able to describe the relationships between food intake, exercise and fitness. Keywords Metabolism Metabolic rate

What happens when you exercise 1.Your muscles contract more to move your limbs. 2.However, muscles need energy to contract. 3.So, muscle cells respire more to release more energy from glucose. 4.To provide this glucose, you need to eat more food.

Metabolic rate and exercise Task 2 - Fill in the gaps When you exercise: Your ___________ contract more to move your limbs. Muscles need __________ to contract. So muscle cells need to __________ more to release more energy from glucose. To provide the energy, you need to eat more _________. ____________ increases the amount of energy expended by the body.

Proportion of muscle to fat –If you have more muscle and less fat, then your body has a higher metabolic rate than someone who has less muscle and more fat. –Males have more muscle and less fat in their bodies; females have less muscle and more fat. This is largely determined by genes. –Most males therefore need to eat more than most females. –Females can increase their muscle mass by exercise.

Effect of exercise on Metabolic rate Task 3 - Fill in the gaps Fat cells store fat. They are __________ and have a low rate of ___________ so they do not use their stored fat. _________ cells are active. They need ________ from respiration to contract. Their rate of respiration is ______. If you have more muscle and less fat then your body has a ________ metabolic rate than someone who has less muscle and _______ fat. You need to eat _______ food to supply the energy needed for the muscle cells.

Learning Objectives All will be able to Define what metabolism and metabolic rate is. Most will be able to describe what affects metabolic rate and the benefits of regular exercise. Some will be able to describe the relationships between food intake, exercise and fitness. Keywords Metabolism Metabolic rate

Other factors that affect Metabolic rate Age - the younger you are the higher your metabolic rate is. Inherited factors - such as high – the taller you are the higher you metabolic rate is People who are ill – e.g. underactive thyroid may have a higher metabolic rate People who are overweight have a higher metabolic rate as the body is larger so it needs to work harder

What if…….. What if you were a teenager that didn’t exercise regularly what would be the consequences? 3 mins

Learning Objectives All will be able to Define what metabolism and metabolic rate is. Most will be able to describe what affects metabolic rate and the benefits of regular exercise. Some will be able to describe the relationships between food intake, exercise and fitness. Keywords Metabolism Metabolic rate
