THE MYSTERY BEHIND DARK MATTER A NEW TYPE OF FUNDAMENTALLY BASIC PARTICLE MAY EXPLAIN AND REVEAL THE MYSTERY BEHIND THE MISSING MATERIAL, DARK MATTER

A FEW FACTS ABOUT DARK MATTER Dark matter is a hypothetical kind of matter that cannot be seen. It accounts for most of the Universe. It is hypothesized that dark matter does not react to light. Dark matter accounts for 26.8% of the mass-energy content of the observable universe, matter accounts for only 4.9% of the mass-energy content of the observable universe, with the remainder being attributable to dark energy, matter accounts for 31.7% of the mass-energy content of the Universe, and 84.5% of the matter is dark matter. The first person to interpret evidence and infer the presence of dark matter was Dutch astronomer Jan Oort. We can only make theories about dark matter by looking at how it’s gravity affects stars and galaxies, it has never been directly observed. Dark matter particles weigh 0.02 of an electron

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON’S RESEARCH Despite extensive efforts the mysterious material has never been directly observed. The new research suggests one reason for this may be that dark matter particles are much lighter than has previously been proposed. While it does not react to light, dark matter acts very strongly to normal matter. It is unlikely that Earth-bound detectors will spot dark matter. "Our candidate particle sounds crazy, but currently there seem to be no experiments or observations which could rule it out. Dark matter is one of the most important unsolved problems in modern physics, and we hope that our suggestion will inspire others to develop detailed particle theory and even experimental tests.“- Dr. James Bateman from the University of Southampton. The team, whose findings are published in the journal Scientific Reports, hope to incorporate a search for the new particle into a space experiment with which it is already involved.

THE EXPERIMENT MAQRO (Macroscopic Quantum Resonators) will aim to test quantum phenomena - the weird behavior of subatomic particles - at larger scales. As part of the experiment, a nanoparticle suspended in space will be used to see if its position is altered by the flow of dark matter

WHAT? WHERE? WHEN? WHO? WHY? What: dark matter Where: University of Southampton When: February 2, 2015 Who: University of Southampton Why: to solve the mystery of dark matter

MY OPINION I think humans need to learn more about dark matter, especially since it makes up 84.5% of matter. I have this opinion because during this project I researched dark matter and I think it is a very interesting topic. It is also important.

ALTERNATIVE POINT OF VIEW An alternative point of view might be a tax payer. The tax payer might not want to fund the research, it has no added value.
