MY GUIDELINES Positive and naturalistic representation of animal. Try to add personality to the animal/pet. Animal is the focal point of the picture, with a border included to help create emphasis. Painted in watercolors using proper technique and good craftsmanship Use of emotional/symbolic color or a color scheme (warm/cool) etc. Created variety through the use of additions within the border, a background being included in the picture, or the use of different watercolor techniques throughout.

MY EXAMPLE: Original Image I worked From My Representation

Symbolic Color Border with Shapes Wet on Wet Technique Salt tye-dye White crayon used to keep white of eyes white

ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES OF ART -Use geometric shapes to begin drawing, then make them more organic to gain realism -Create emphasis on your animal by adding a border and using contrasting colors. -Use of emotional/symbolic color

WATERCOLOR TECHNIQUE: Always use water to thin paint and lighten colors Watercolors appear soft and light- do not try to get super-bright or dark colors. Paint loosely There is no white: anything white is left the color of the paper. Build layers to get darker colors Use a clean, damp brush, to remove freshly painted accidents Wash brush well between colors to keep color trays clean If too much water, or paper too wet, colors will run and blend together- use this to your advantage when planned Paint large color areas first, then change to a smaller brush and add details last Allow layers of paint to dry before adding more color. You can outline in white crayon first to create a resist between shapes if desired. Effects: Salt tye-dye Wet on wet Blown paint Color fades

WATERCOLOR PRACTICE (BEEHIVE) 1.Create a color fade for the hive,. Include the colors brown, orange, and yellow. When dry, shade the left side of the hive, as if the light source were coming from the right. (skip to step two while drying). 2.Use wet on wet technique for the leaves. Include the colors green and blue. 3.Using a white crayon, draw shapes, images, or lines within the border (you may draw lightly in pencil first if it helps). 4.Paint the border using colors that contrast with and create emphasis on the hive. Somewhere within the border, practice the salt tye-dye effect, and the blown paint effect.
