Green Architecture CANKAYA UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF BASIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES- ENGLISH UNIT

Pre-reading activity (p. 28): 1. What do you think “green architecture” means? Scan the text and find the definition of green architecture. 2. How might “green building” be different from traditional building? 3. Do you think that green architecture is popular in Turkey? 4. Is it possible to construct buildings using green architecture in Turkey? Talk about the energy sources available in Turkey? How can these sources be used without giving harm to the environment?

This is supposedly the most sustainable design for a commercial building in the world. To be set up in North America, the design includes a photovoltaic power plant which is to generate all the needed power for the building. Not only that, the architecture will also include a 50,000 gallon reservoir that will collect rainwater which then will be treated so that it is suitable for consumption. Bullitt Center

Apart from being an astonishingly beautiful creation, this flower-shaped building hosts a lot of efficiently used green features like rainwater harvesting, solar panels attached to the roofs, solar chimney etc. While rainwater harvesting and solar power generated through solar panels help to meet the water and power requirement of the building, solar chimney in the middle of the structure helps to maximize natural ventilation. 6 The Taiwan Tower is the tallest structure in the city of Taichung. This circular tower has been designed to resist the force of wind along with making the most of renewable sources of energy. The architecture of this structure eliminates the need of mechanical cooling or heating of the building thus saving a large quantity of energy. Sustainable Circular Taiwan Tower

This building isdesigned for University College Nordjylland. It is a sustainable architectural design. It is set up in Aalborg, Denmark. The design consists of four buildings around a common space. The entire concept surrounds around energy efficiency. The architects plan to use solar power to meet the energy requirement of the buildings while making the balconies. 23 1. In green architecture, the energy of sun and wind is saved and used. 2. Instead of using the sources that are not regionally available, it is better to use the materials already existing in the construction site. 3. There are two major ways of carrying out green architecture. 4. How to use natural light is crucial to save energy. Par. 4 Par. 7 Par. 2 Par. 6

5. The importance of green architecture is realized more and more each day as the conventional ways of building are dangerous for the environment. 6. Using second-hand materials is a part of green architecture. 7. Buildings in the U.S. use up the majority of the resources of the country. 8. Saving and using the water of rain is a way of using environmentally friendly systems. Par. 8 Par. 3 Par. 1 Par. 5

1. What do you think greenhouse greenhouse gas in paragraph 1 mean? How does it affect the environment?  Greenhouse gases are those that can absorb and emit infrared radiation. (The primary greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere are: water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone). Greenhouse gases greatly affect the temperature of the Earth. Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the burning of fossil fuels has contributed to the increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

2. What percentage of the energy produced in the U.S. is consumed by the buildings?  Buildings in the U.S. consume 65 percent of all electricity, 12 percent of drinkable water and 40 percent of all raw materials produced in the country.

3. What is the definition of green architecture?  Green architecture is the creation or restructuring of buildings so they have a minimal impact on the environment. It means the reconstruction of old buildings, recycling sources and as well as building new structures using environmentally-friendly materials.

4. Why has green architecture become more popular recently?  Because more people have become concerned about the wise use of the planet's resources, the concept of green architecture have become both acceptable and interesting.

6. What are solar panels used for?  The panels with the storage tanks enable to store energy for electrical needs such as cooking, keeping the temperature in the building at a comfortable level, and running necessary equipment such as computers.

7. What is the importance of windows in a building?  The location of windows in a building is important. Windows decrease the demand for artificial light during the daytime. They also allow the natural sunlight which heats the interior of the building.

8. Why do you think using local construction elements is important?  (Some examples) If local construction elements are used in buildings, there won’t be any waste of energy because of the transportation of other construction elements that are not local. Local construction elements are also more sustainable and therefore environmentally friendly.

9. What can rainwater be used for? How is it processed before it is used?  It can be used for tasks such as watering lawns, growing crops, or operating sewage systems. Rainwater is purified by the help of a system that reserves purified water for drinking, cooking, and bathing.

9. What can rainwater be used for? How is it processed before it is used?  It can be used for tasks such as watering lawns, growing crops, or operating sewage systems. Rainwater is purified by the help of a system that reserves purified water for drinking, cooking, and bathing.

10. What are the three main concerns that should be taken into consideration when architects and designers create buildings?  natural resource,  human health, and  community concerns.
