1 What are the characteristics of plants?
Lesson 24 What are the characteristics of plants? Kids are to write: Lesson 24 What are the characteristics of plants. They should do this without being told

2 Plants are pretty to look at. We decorate our homes with them.
We work hard to grow gardens No notes, just ask why we like to have plants around.

And have thick lawns. Sometimes, we give flowers to our loved ones. Same as previous screen

4 Plants give us pleasure, but most important:
Without plants, there could be no life on earth!! Plants give us oxygen. Kids write underlined sentence, and rest of page. The last sentence always throws them. Don’t explain….yet. They give us our food. All the food we eat comes from plants, either directly or indirectly.

5 Figure these out: Why wouldn’t we still have cows, pigs and chickens to eat if there were no plants? The idea is to get them to realize that the animals eat plants, if there are no plants, the animals die and we have no food.

- Plants have many cells. - The cells of plants form tissues and organs. - Plant cells are surrounded by a rigid cell wall, made of cellulose. It gives plants their stiffness. Kids write underlined sentence and everything else. The third can be shortened to: Plant cells have cell wall, made of cellulose, that is stiff and holds up plants - Plants make their own food

8 Most food making takes place in the green leaves of plants.
Plants make their own food using the chlorophyll stored in the cell’s chloroplasts. Most food making takes place in the green leaves of plants. The leaves are often called “the plant’s food factory. Kids write all of it

10 The plant kingdom is divided into two large groups, called phyla.
Vascular plants: Belong to the division tracheophyta. Have stems, roots and leaves. Notes: Vascular Plants: Division: tracheophyta Have stems, roots, leaves Vascular system (tubes) carries water and nutrients around plants Have a vascular system (connecting tubes) which carry water and dissolved nutrients to all parts of the plants.

11 And other flowering plants
Vascular plants are the most complex plants. Most of the plants you know belong to this group of plants. ferns trees roses Kids write names of examples And other flowering plants

12 Belong to the division bryophyta.
Nonvascular Plants: Belong to the division bryophyta. They are very simple plants. Do not have true roots, stems, or leaves. They have no vascular system. Notes: Nonvascular Plants: Division: bryophyta Very simple plants No true roots, stems, leaves No vascular system

13 This group includes: mosses liverworts hornwarts
Write name of examples

14 Most plants reproduce by seeds.
All seed plants are vascular plants. Biologists classify seed plants into two groups. gymnosperms Uncovered seeds. Notes: All of screen Most common are evergreens which produce cones

15 No notes, talk about how we know they are gymnosperms
