4. Stage 1 EGG A butterfly starts its life as an egg, often lain on a leaf. INTERESTING FACT: The coolest thing about butterfly eggs, especially monarch butterfly eggs, is that if you look close enough you can actually see the tiny caterpillar growing inside of it. JOURNAL : Stage 1-- Eggs are laid on leaves.

5. Stage 2 Larva (Caterpillar) The larva (caterpillar) hatches from an egg and eats leaves and flowers almost constantly. When the egg hatches, the caterpillar will start his work and eat the leaf on which it was born. Each caterpillar type likes only certain types of leaves. This is really important because the mother butterfly needs to lay her eggs on the type of leaf the caterpillar will eat. JOURNAL Stage 2– Larva hatch from eggs.

6. Stage 3 Pupa (Chrysalis) The pupa stage is one of the coolest stages of a butterfly’s life. From the outside the caterpillar looks like it is resting, but really on the inside of the pupa, the caterpillar is rapidly changing. JOURNAL Stage 3 – The pupa is rapidly changing.

7. As most of us know, caterpillars are short, stubby and have no wings at all. Within the pupa the old body parts of the caterpillar are undergoing a remarkable transformation, called ‘complete metamorphosis,’ (meaning change) to become the beautiful parts that make up the butterfly that will emerge. All parts of a caterpillar have been changed by the time the pupa has completed metamorphosis, and is now ready for the final stage of a butterfly’s life cycle. 8. Stage 4 Adult A beautiful, flying adult emerges from the pupa. Usually within a three or four-hour period, the butterfly will master flying. This adult will continue the life cycle by laying eggs all over again. JOURNAL Stage 4 – Adult butterfly

9. Complete Metamorphosis: is when an insect has completed all four separate stages of growth or development. JOURNAL IMPORTANT!!!!! Complete Metamorphosis – All FOUR stages complete.
