16 Attempt to Land Captain Fuchs aircraft was too high and too close to the airport to perform a landing so he was forced to circle the airport until he could reduce his air speed and altitude. In attempt to slow his aircraft he extended the flaps but only the inner wing flaps extended because the hydraulic system to extend the outer flaps had been damaged when the engine separated from the wing. This caused the wing to have a greater pitch angle when landing. The sudden drop in airspeed caused the plane to bank to the right. In an attempt to save the plane, Captain Fuchs increased the engine power, in turn dooming himself and the crew.
