2 www.phrn.nhs.uk Aims  To develop networks of “research friendly” prisons willing to  Actively host research  Assist researchers with access  Develop their own research priorities  Encourage staff to develop research skills and interests

3 www.phrn.nhs.uk Model  MRC General Practice Research Framework  Over 1,000 primary care practices  Practice nurses act as on-site researchers  Training given in study procedures & reporting  Co-ordinated by a central body

4 www.phrn.nhs.uk Progress to date  Individual prisons  Prison clusters within PCT catchments  Regional networks based on CSIP boundaries

5 www.phrn.nhs.uk Capability building  Encourage clinicians/discipline officers to become involved in prison based health research  Advice, training and sign-posting to training opportunities  Encourage academics to employ staff researchers on funded projects

6 www.phrn.nhs.uk Capability building WHY?  Hard to become involved in research when working clinically – time, opportunity, funding BUT  Emerging services in prison health  Evidence based practice
