3 Project Background Leadership Development Task Force formed in early 2013 Challenge: How to better identify, engage, and develop leaders for the AIHA Board, volunteer groups, and local sections Proposed Path Forward: A Leadership Development program for past, present, and future AIHA leaders

4 The Big Picture Volunteering = leadership development = professional development Leadership Track vs. Leadership Pipeline Looking forward and looking back Built-in succession planning Soft skills training These are the overarching principles that inform this plan Volunteering, leadership development, and professional development are all intertwined. This plan recognizes and highlights that fact. AIHA has a fairly well-defined leadership track; the challenge is to have a pipeline preparing volunteers for that leadership track. This plan focuses on that need. This plan engages current and past leaders in preparing future leaders and coaching current ones. This plan builds long-range succession planning into the volunteer group structure This plan recognizes the need to have soft-skills training as part of our professional development opportunities for our members in order to help them be more effective leaders This plan builds on existing structures and resources to maximize efficiency Building on what works

5 Program Outline Targets three groups: Future leaders, current leaders, past leaders Builds on existing structures and resources wherever possible; minimal budget impact Builds leadership development into volunteer group project work Expands individual micro-volunteering opportunities Smart expansion of SECP mentoring program Refer to attached program outline for detailed description

6 Program Outline New elements Leadership Advisory Group
Volunteer orientations Volunteer database Succession planning Soft-skills training Leadership Advisory Group: Will meet as needed to advise and guide implementation of this program. Recommend appointing current task force members as initial members of this group Volunteer Orientations: Helps volunteers to see the big picture and a pathway for themselves within it Volunteer Database: To capture volunteers’ interests, skills, and availability and match them with volunteer opportunities, whether within or outside the committee structure Succession Planning: Develop tools for volunteer groups to use, task past leaders with leading the effort Soft-skills training: Planning underway within Education department

7 Program Outcomes AIHA has an expanded pipeline for future leaders
Volunteers grow their leadership skills through volunteer activity A leadership development cycle is built into the AIHA volunteer program Current leaders’ skills are developed while also developing others’ skills IH Professionals are equipped for and engaged in leadership in their field IH professionals are equipping other leaders in their field
