10 Letters and Sounds  Jolly Phonics – Actions and Songs  We incorporate many opportunities for your child to practice reading and writing throughout the week.  In Oak base, your child will receive regular ‘Letters and Sounds’ phonics sessions,  Delivered through a range of practical and fun activities.  Letters and sounds attainment groups to start end of Autumn term.

11 Individual Reading  The class teachers will hear your child read on an individual basis at least twice a half term. The purpose of this is to establish an accurate home reading book level not a teaching session.  The rational behind this is because to read with each child individually is a very time consuming process and takes away from valuable teaching time.  However if you feel your child is confidently reading a range of books on their current level, please communicate this to us via your child’s Verwood Journal and we will be more then happy to hear them again. It is your child’s responsibility to change their book when they have finished reading it.  If we are fortunate enough to have any extra adults/students/helpers they will also hear readers whenever possible.

12 Reading - Teaching of reading- Guided Reading  Two week cycle  Week 1 – Teacher will take individual readers and the other children will read independently.  Week 2 – Teacher will read the story back to the children and there will be a focus on comprehension.
