LIBRARIANS BECOME ACTORS FOR NURSES Jean Slepian, Librarian, and the Evidence Based Nursing Group at Cheshire Medical Center, Keene, New Hampshire – A Brief History. The NER RAC Hospital Subcommittee gets involved – Mark Goldstein says – so should we do this Play? 18 Months to the NAHSL Conference – can it be done?

Why did the RAC get involved with this PLAY? All hospital librarians have instituted many kinds of programs to encourage nurses to use the hospital library – Freebees All manner of instruction Everything in between

What did being involved with the Play create? A new playing field – a new type of dialogue A regional collaboration among librarians The mechanics of the Play helped the RAC Players understand our own capabilities, limitations, and desire to try something new not knowing the impact of the Play on a broad scale This type of change is risky business

How risky was doing the Play? The effect on two populations – nurses and librarians The first outcome measurement came from a Director of Professional Development – the Play was viable – format & content First audience was librarians at NAHSL Moved from the author to become a RAC ongoing Project

How has the Play changed? Nurses know and are getting involved The Play has evolved into an important encouragement tool – aiding nurses in understanding the importance of Evidence Based Information and its relationship to Nursing Best Practices Its fun, engaging, and collaborative Relationship building in an unique way

What is the message? All training and experience is anecdotal! – What a piece of information this is… When evidence based information is added to any combination of training and experience, the old practice is either supported or it must change to support a new Best Practice.

Lets see some excerpts and get to know the characters… Olive – The quintessential nurse – all training and experience Emily – the EBN – has survived the addition of evidence and has become an even better nurse The Judge, The Defense Attorney, The Prosecuting Attorney, and all the cast…lets look in on this courtroom…
