3 UTMB Employee Wellness Getting Started Formal program established in 1992 based in part on the success of a pilot fitness program within the Human Resources department Groundwork completed over the first two years represents a good case study for other sites to follow –Define mission –Identify champions –Determine available resources –Create personal touch points –Align with organizational mission

4 UTMB Employee Wellness Getting Started Consistent mission for the last 15 years: –“Provide health promotion education and activities to support the goal of improving the overall health of the employee population” Behavior change model used to develop initial program mix –Awareness –Targeted intervention –Regular follow – ups –Programs with mass appeal –Emphasis on keeping low risk individuals low risk

5 UTMB Health Promotion Alumni Field House On-site facility became the home for health promotion program offerings and allowed further alignment with core organizational and business goals –Teaching –Research –Patient care –Recruitment

6 Alumni Field House Fitness to Medical Fitness Facility has grown from 5,000 sq ft in 1992 to 50,000 sq ft currently Yearly visits by employees, students and retirees have grown from approximately 18,000 to over 100,000 in 2006 Medical fitness model creates unique atmosphere of blended user mix

9 UTMB Employee Health & Wellness Current Program Highlights Tobacco Cessation lead by certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist, Patrice Houston, M.A., LPC,LCDC, CEAP, TTS –Individual based counseling with nicotine replacement and twelve month support –Two year experience of nicotine replacement therapy/counseling model has yielded a 30% one year quit rate

10 UTMB Employee Health Promotion Current Program Mix Departmental Health Initiatives –Six month programs with goal of internal sustainability post initiative Special Intervention Programs/Disease Management with Physician referrals –Orthopedic, Cardiovascular, Cancer –Employees seen by Exercise Physiologist, Julie Dial, M.A.
