RENESENG Kick-off Meeting Athens, 28-29 November 2013 Sara Giarola Mayank Patel Prof. Nilay Shah Centre for Process System Engineering Imperial College London WP6. Systems tools and software s.giarola10@imperial.ac.uk n.shah@imperial.ac.uk

WP6 overall scope This work package consolidates developments from WP1- WP4 by setting up  clusters of modelling and decision support software,  repositories of data, information and knowledge for engineers and biorenewables analysts generated in WP1 – WP4 and validated in WP5 WP6 is aimed to commercial engineering products delivery RENESENG Kick-off Meeting 29th November 2013 2

WP6 Tasks T6.1 Knowledge engineering models and communication hubs (UoS, NTUA, EPFL): The task is intended to help RENESENG organize the vast range of resources produced by its different WPs (models, data, reports, internet sites) also offering means to also invite and integrate with resources outside RENESENG. T6.2 Platform for high-throughput screening of processes and technologies (NTUA, UoS, EPFL, Imperial, DTU): The proposed platform will enable access to collection of biorefinery related functions developed in WP1 – WP4 to enable (a) screening of industrial chemistries and technologies, (b) targeting of equipment efficiency for reaction and fractionation, and (c) the targeting of the system integration. RENESENG Kick-off Meeting 29th November 2013 3

WP6 Tasks T6.3 Biorenewable workbooks (NTUA, UoS, EPFL, Imperial, DTU, QUANTIS, DLO, CERTH) : The task is using models in T6.1 to create shareable repositories intended to integrate data and information generated by RENESENG into an accessible and sharable environment. T6.4 Roadmap visualization of supply chains (Imperial, UoS): This task aims to produce strategic decision roadmaps from available portfolios of feedstocks, chemistries, technologies and business models, of a spatial and temporal nature. T6.5 Global BioRefinery Costing Early Estimation tool (Arkema, NTUA): The objective is to contribute to build a method for fast Capital Cost (CAPEX) and Operating Cost (OPEX) Evaluation for Technologies under development like the Biorefineries. RENESENG Kick-off Meeting 29th November 2013 4

WP6 Milestones 6.1 Completion of knowledge engineering models and communication hubs  UoS 6.2 Completion of platform for high-throughput screening of processes and technologies  EPFL 6.3 Completion of biorenewable webbooks  UoS 6.4 Roadmap visualization of supply chain toolkit delivery  Imperial RENESENG Kick-off Meeting 29th November 2013 5

Communicate and transfer data in a consistent way within the consortium Standardised characterization  i.e. IDs, technical/economic/environmental description of feedstock process product RENESENG Kick-off Meeting 29th November 2013 6 M6.4: Roadmap visualization of supply chains toolkit delivery

Tool for optimal process selection and network design Strategic and operational optimisation of the biorefining and supply chain system  modelling framework might vary depending on the kind of approach for the processing path design (WP3) User-friendly GUI  easy parameter input  results visualization RENESENG Kick-off Meeting 29th November 2013 7 M6.4: Roadmap visualization of supply chains toolkit delivery

RENESENG Kick-off Meeting 29th November 2013 8 Input to change: -assumptions on feedstocks -hypotheses on technologies -definition of product demand (quality/quantity) -link with GIS database Planning decisions -biorefinery location -biomass catchment areas -logistics -process technology Operating decisions -scheduling resource allocation storage

M6.4: Roadmap visualization of supply chains toolkit delivery Results for different perspectives RENESENG Kick-off Meeting 29th November 2013 9 Managerial results Engineering results

Supply chain toolkit functionalities Changing the objective function Changing the system resolution or the region of study Changing the assumptions around resources and land-use Changing the assumptions about the allowed technologies e.g. including variability on the yields and allowed transportation infrastructure/modes Changing the assumptions about the policy environment, including subsidies or opportunity cost for niche crops RENESENG Kick-off Meeting 29th November 2013 10
