1 Careers Strategy As it is: 2013

2 Year 8 General student body undertakes self awareness activities that highlights student strengths and weaknesses Specialist Soccer programme includes promotion of the range of roles involved in the sport/management areas students are able to experience all of the roles around running a sporting team Students become involved in community service term 3 onwards Formalised subject counselling in term 3 Science Department looks at specific skills development for students interested in a “scientific pathway” look at the competencies required for specific career pathways Mathematics looks at financial maths and where these skills are used Literacy and maths skills for life

3 Year 9 Students engage in Mind matters a programme that enhances resilience and is designed to help reduce stress Presentation from the Tax Department students apply for Tax File numbers Students work on relationship skills Subject counselling based on year 9 results and interests Science has a focus on Engineering and Biomechanical, Biological, Environmental and Physiological sciences. Students discuss and pathway and career options available in these areas Maths students study the topics of Measurement Architectural Design and Engineering and delve into the pathways into these careers English Literacy/maths skills for life

4 Year 10 PLP for all students at this level Goal setting, setting goals who can help resilience Career development career search Uni SA Career profile, My future, Beacon, Speed careers, Speakers, Career Expo, TAFE presentation Students access Career nights e.g. Western Futures Work experience/ Work observation Speed Careering Speakers in Schools Literacy and Numeracy skill development linked to career and life requirements Students begin to access Apprenticeship brokers/Career Advisor to discuss pathways and options

5 Year 10 Science looks at specialist courses guest speakers students undertake a “visit to Uni” Look further into engineering through Advance Tech and Engineering Challenge Maths………… Subject counselling students introduced to VET courses for the following year

6 Senior Years Presentations from a range of universities and TAFE post schools options SACE night for parents and students Speakers in schools Western future dinners/Evenings Presentation SAPOL RAP Presentation Industry Visits through Beacon Apprenticeship broker visits Workplace Practices offered at Year 11/12 Senior leadership team works with students/parents to investigate pathways for students

7 What is developing? Currently looking for options to increase awareness for staff in 8/9 years Gray Pohnell using guiding circles and career focus activities How to do this without putting staff/students under more pressure!!!!!? Embed/Incorporate careers in Social Education Years 8/9 Incorporate careers/work investigation in each subject Increase work/community visits at all levels more overtly over all subject areas Presenting the career strategy to curriculum leaders/faculties/staff Working with staff to help them to adopt a career focus in their subject areas perhaps look at application of skills in the community? Looking at replacing Work experience with targeted industry visits within 2 years

8 Need to consider ? Ways to incorporate careers in subjects include: Taking students on industry visits as appropriate to their subject Students investigations on application of skills Inviting more speakers to present to students Specific investigations embedded into subjects, a day in the life Incorporating a career component in each subject

9 2013 Achievements Attendance of students to Career Expo Redesigning of PLP to explicitly incorporate Graduate Qualities Rework year 8/9/10 Social Education time to explicitly incorporate career development and Graduate Qualities All students year 10 and above to undertake Uni SA Career Match Profile Incorporation of targeted industry visits for students Staff in-service into “My Future” Greater emphasis on working on individual pathways for students in conjunction with Vet Coordinator, Apprenticeship Brokers, Counsellors and parents Continuation of SACE Expo and Sace information evening Inroduction of Workplace practices Stage 1 and 2 Establishment of a Workplace Practices PLC for schools delivering in the area

10 2014 and Beyond Continuation of Industry visits with further development in cooperation with Western Futures and Apprenticeship Brokers Continue to develop support for individual students Continue to work on graduate qualities and an electronic portfolio of evidence to support this Establish a parent Group to encourage and support greater parent involvement in the school and to become more actively involved in career Development for their child. Expand our industry partnerships to provide greater variety in career advice/support Continue to search for initiatives that will support and provide advice for our students in the word of careers
